So I thought I would try to be a contributing member. This was my first "gunsmith" project. I went to an auction expecting t buy furniture, and low and behold they had 2 rough looking guns. One was a single shot shotgun, the other was an enfield. So for $75, i bought it. It turned out to be a 1941 Lithgow S.M.L.E. NO. 1, Mk lll* Someone had cut the charging bar off, and previously sporterized it. I had been wanting a lightweight, handy rifle similar to my fathers Marlin 336. So I thought this would make a decent rifle. before image by jt671987, on Flickr IMG_0804 by jt671987, on Flickr IMG_0812 by jt671987, on Flickr IMG_0806 by jt671987, on Flickr IMG_0818 by jt671987, on Flickr

I refinished the stock, at the same time I shortened the forearm, giving it some more modern lines. The rear stock had be cut at some point, so I lengthened the rear to give me better LOP. the whole stock was sanded, oil rubbed, and then waxed. I then cut the barrel to 20", added a williams scout mount, and leatherwood SCOUT scope using weaver rings. And finally a sling. Overall it was a cheap project with less than $250 in it. Pretty is, as pretty does. It'll look even better when your eating venison tenderloins ! A unique solution to the Penn woods deer gun problem.

I believe Jeff Cooper used the same type rifle for his first scout rifle built actually Cooper's first scout was a Remington 600 in 308.

But he praised the Enfield, glowingly and unceasingly.
Just reread Finn Aagaard's article about the No.4 and No.5. Great column, if you can find it.
Nice work, and well done.
