I have always wanted a Colt but I also would like a new Corvette. Well time has come and it's now time to buy a Colt. I should start with I want to get a shooter not a looker. I'm not sure about .44 spl. or a .45. My big question is which one. I think that I'd be better off getting one that is NIB, but even that could have problems. Some people that I know tell me that the newer Blue Boxed guns are good ones, others say the Brown boxed are the better to have. One thing I do know is that none of these self proclaimed experts (these are local village idiots, not people from this site) have any Colts that I have ever seen. So if anyone can and would offer some advice I truly would be Thankful.
I have .44spl. and .45 Rugers and have enjoyed shooting them for years, I just want to fix this itch for a Colt.

I am listening in to hear the feedback. I have always said I was going to buy a real SAA Colt as well but never took the plunge. Like you, it may be time.

I have not had any of the newer Colts even though I have read that the newest version of the New Frontier is a very nice gun. I do know that the second generation Colt SAAs I have had in both 44 Special and 45 Colt were very well put together. In fact, I am trying to get the short barreled 45 back!

I just snagged a new made NF off of gunbroker today, .44 Special with 5.5 bbl. I blame Bob Wright for driving me to do it. LOL! Not my first Colt though. I will post a couple pix when I get it home.

Have a NIB blue box SAA that is going on the sale list. Never had the cylinder turned, just can't warm up to the Colts.

Your first Colt single action needs to be an SAA in .45 Colt.

I have one NF 45, a 2nd gen, that is a very nice gun. The adjustable sights are good quality and it is an advantage being able to get the gun to hit POA with a few screw clicks. For some reason that I cannot explain the NF would not "scratch that itch" for me if it was my only Colt SA.
I have several SAA's and prefer any of them to the NF. I have 2nds and 3rds, and even one first gen gun. One is the newer SAA that everyone says is better...and from my view they are correct. The latest guns are in my opinion as nice as any first or second gen Colt that I have personally owned or fired. I would not hesitate to buy one sight unseen. Thirds from the 80's would have to be looked at closely before I would ever buy one. I had one that was so bad it was hard to believe it was a Colt. The Italian imports are better than that gun. It is fixed now but took a lot to get it working...and it was NIB.
As for caliber, the 45 is the classic caliber IMO and it will surly feel like you have your Colt itch scratched. Every 45 I have ever seen, owned, fired, all had oversized throats in the cylinders. I have read that the new NF's are the same. With that said, two of mine shoot very well with .454 sized bullets. My 3rd gen 45 made in 1994 had accuracy issues no matter the bullet. This one now has a .357 cylinder that Alan Harton re-bored to a tight 45 Colt and it shoots equally tight groups now with .452 bullets.
I have a couple 44 specials and have fired a few more. Every one I have handled shoots VERY well. I am sure there is one out there that won't but I haven't seen it yet. If I wanted to be sure that a Colt would be a good shooter I would look for a 44...if its between those two calibers.
