No, I didn't go to the range with a law firm Instead I took a quick tour through the safe and headed out with a few favorites. Here's the details, left to right in the top picture:
Kimber Stainless Target II, 10mm. I had some loads of 180gr Nosler JHP's over 11gr of AA#7 in Starline brass. They shot very well and the Kimber was a hoot. It flung the brass a good thirty feet off to my side, but they all landed near each other. First time with a 1911 10mm for me and I liked it, although I think I'm done with the 10mm for the foreseeable future as the next gun in line is what I'm taking hunting this year.
Bowen-built Nimrod, 45 Colt, on a Ruger stainless Bisley. Load was a 300gr Cast Performance LFN over 21gr of H110. Not the hottest load, but a thumper nonetheless. Switching between factory revolvers and my Bowen gun while on the range deck is the surest way for me to perceive the extra fit and finish that are in the custom gun. Loads hit right on top of the sights at 25 yards and went into a tidy 3" group; not bad as I'm sorely out of practice with handguns that recoil appreciably. I've got 1000 pieces of Starline brass, seven pounds of W296 and 1000 Cast Performance 335gr bullets to load up. Hopefully I'll get to put a deer down with it this fall.
Next over is one of the Lipsey's Ruger Single Sevens in 327 Federal Magnum, 7.5" barrel. I found an old bag of 32 H&R reloads from about 2005 in my reloading room so I figured I'd run them through the gun. The sensation of a big muzzle blast and no recoil takes some getting used to, but the little gun points well and hits where I point it. All in all a nice change of pace from the 45 Colt.
Last but not least, my S&W M41 with 5" field barrel. I take this one along every time to shoot in between the bigger guns. I got it dialed in at 50 yards with Federal Auto Match ammo and I was able to produce a decent enough group--10 shots in the 8" black circle of the target. Not great, but better than not going shooting at all
