While I was reading his book, he talks about the Ultra Dot red site. Since I can't see the sights very good anymore, I thought I would try one. I put one on my FA97 in 41 mag. I will tell you one thing, I have been giving those groundhogs hell! This gun is deadly with this sight on it! Man, I feel like hunting now. Also, it does not even seem to make the gun any heavier. I bet it would really work good in the woods on deer, bear, and hogs. Anybody else like them? This is a good book also.

They last too. J.D. Jones suggested one for my 14" 50-70 Encore barrel in 1997. It is still in use today and works as well as the day it was bought.
My BFR 454 Casull wears one as well. Not as old, but works just as well.
The Whit book worth every penny.

Any suggestions on model?
I have a g2 contender with an 8" .45 colt barrel that needs a red dot.

I am quite fond of the Ultradot 30, but also use an Ultradot 4 and a 6. I have also used the two reflex-type sights Ultradot makes rather extensively.

Can I use the drilled holes for a leupold scope mount on my Blackhawk to mount a ultra dot?

I had trouble with mine. Leading theory was that because it had the changeable apertures, there was something "odd" with the aperture changing dial that would make the dot walk around under recoil. Sent it back, they sent me a target with a 10round or so .22 caliber 2-3" group on it with a note "no problem found".
If you get an ultradot, I strongly suggest getting one without an adjustable aperture. a 2moa dot is useless for target shooting. I don't know about groundhogs. the 4moa dot fits a 25 yard NRA target very nicely when posted at 100 yards. the less features, the less there is to get messed up under recoil.
If I ever give UD a try again, it will be a plain jane vanilla ultradot 30.
Only other thing is the rings it comes with are junk. bought some warne rings (pick QD or permanent, it doesn't matter) and that tube will never move no matter how much the gun does.

I have abused Ultradot 30s more than any other models and have yet to experience a failure. But, I have also tested/abused both Ultradot 4s and 6s without a single failure while mounted on some pretty heavy recoilers. If there is still something wrong with the sight they returned to you, I would insist on a replacement. I have found them to be more than fair to the consumer.

I have to say something here just as a help thing. First off YES Max you are right about these Ultradots. They are tough and if a Red Dot type of sight can handle the 454 then it has to be tough. You shared this info three or four months back.
Now for those who are really having a tough time seeing,, And I mean like a person who needs trifocals or If you just can't seem to get enough light in your eyes when it is dusk,,,, Well good news, bad news, Good news is Trijicon makes a red dot and it is 42 mm VS 30 mm Ultra dot Now If you just read that in a catalog or see it on the web, that might not mean too much. But get one in your hands or put one on a gun and you can really tell a difference. SiZE Matters ( what she said ) Bad news 650.00 or more is the price tag. And they don't come in braille. Optics planet used to put them on sale once in awhile. I was very fortunate one day, when at the range an older man had one with the QD when we got started talking and comparing he said here try this. We both being at the 50 yd range,,,,, I was polite and said certainly, Thank You Sir,,,,, They are nice. If you have a rifle scope that is 42 mm on the objective then you now have an idea, just how big that trijicon is. If you use a picatanny rail and a QD you can swap back and forth between two or more guns. I have done it with Eotechs and trijicons ON RIFLES.
Not trying to sell any body on anything. just another FYI thing.

Hello
Will their reflex sight handle the recoil of a BFR 500 S&W?
Also, any experience with the Deltapoint Reflex sight on the very heavy recoiling handguns?
Thanks Mark

I put a 3.25 MOA Trijicon RMR reflex sight on mine. It is mounted on a 44 Special FA97 via a FA mount. Obviously, it has not been subjected to brutal recoil. But, the sight picture works fine for me and it holds zero without fail.
My brother swears by the Ultradots and has had nothing but good luck with a number of different models mounted on Ruger Blackhawks of various calipers.
In the end, I think there are a number of good red dot options available if you spend the money to get a good one. You just have to weigh the pros and cons of each design.

Thanks Mark I have an Ultradot L/T on my .500 JRH BFR and so far it has held up to the abuse, but I haven't shot a lot of rounds through this one yet. So far so good, and the price is right as far as I am concerned.
