Hello
I am thinking about getting a BFR 500S&W. I have had two Smiths and both had problems with auto indexing with heavy loads. Have any of you heard of any problems with the BFR 500 S&Ws?
Thanks Mark

All I have heard has been excellent. I wish MRI would come out with a mid length frame for the 500 S&W, 445 SuperMag, etc.
But, even with the long cylinder, accuracy is supposed to be excellent.
I have a number of BFRs, but not that one. Going only by what others report.

While I don't have a bfr in 500 s&w I do have one chambered in 50-110 wcf and have had no issues with the cylinder indexing thus far.

I think the X Frame issues originate from it being a DA. I don't think it can physically happen in a SA. At least I have never heard of it.

Only problem I know of was on The first BFR's chambered in 500S&W, there cylinder heat-treat wasn't up to the hotter Corbin loads and had some bulge there cylinder's, BFR changed there heat-treat and fixed the problem.

I believe it was the X-frame that had trouble with CorBon's 440 grain loads. If the BFR had trouble I hadn't heard. I will see what I can dig up on this. I don't think there is a production revolver that can run with a BFR with regards to strength. They are beefy in all the right places.

Re: Auto indexing ... If this were true then Lee and Whit would have full auto 5 shots with 550gr T Rex loads...and those recoil freaks would like it!

My first 500SW BFR had the low temp heat-treat, I didn't hurt the cylinder but did notice sticky extraction with my hand loads. I sent it in to have the cylinder fluted and the tech told me about the change in the heat-treat, they replaced my cylinder. Added pictures

I had the auto-indexing problem with my standard 8 3/8" S&W. 2 shots so fast it only sounded like one. It took a lot of concentration with the hot loads to prevent.
I know think the ideal gun for the 500 S&W is a handi-rifle.

My two Smiths would index (rotate) backwards so the next shot was on an empty (fired) chamber. Not real handy when in Alaska bear country!

John Ross has a rather lengthy article on the 500 S&W in the X Frame. It might be of some help. www.john-ross.net

The "auto double taps" are from the trigger being pulled twice. This and the cylinder counter rotating cannot happen with a SA.
