Redhawk interchangeable sight system with standard plastic insert in steel ramp. While innovative base is all Ruger, the molded plastic red insert is copied from S&W M-29. Four insert sights, clockwise from Redhawk muzzle: black plastic ramp, red insert ramp, black steel ramp, post, filed by David from steel ramp in 1982, used extensively on 1982 Redhawk 5-1/2".
Original Redhawk steel ramp sights.
Post filed from steel ramp on 1982 5-1/2" barrel. Proved better in sun-washed Texas deer hunting than the red insert ramp. Sights, clockwise from muzzle: black plastic, red-insert steel ramp, black steel ramp.
Various Redhawk sights. Redhawk muzzle on left; Ruger 03 Bisley Blackhawk on right. Yellow, white, and powder blue inserts provide contrast in limited applications, but wash out under so many light conditions as to negate practicality. Fluorescent orange looks like a radiation hazard, without clear edges to sight. Dark red provides no special brightness against mottled woods, yet vanishes as fast as, or faster than, black.
Prodding from one Mr. 2 Dogs caused us to pluck the red-insert ramp from the Ruger 03 and snap in a black plastic ramp. To test whether shift from red to black would shift POI, we marched upon snowshoes 160 paces to jab a cardboard rectangle in the snow. In keeping with the Siberian science of this experiment, the sun has set, mercury reads fahrenheit 10-below ZERO.
Ruger 03 with .45 ACP cylinder. Black ramp Redhawk sight. Target barely visible at 160 paces.
2x4 shots on target from 160 paces. Commercial cast .452" 225 TC BB over 5.5/231. Mixed .45 ACP brass, CCI 300, COL=1.195". Target stuck in snow, with bottom half concealed by a rise.
Cast 225 TC BB hit cardboard on slight yaw. Bevel base possible culprit, as bullet did not touch snow.
Exit of 225 TC BB from 160 paces shows declining velocity, slight yaw.
225 TC BB cut 15' dry snow 25 yards before striking target. Obvious though slight tipping (yaw) as bullet enters cardboard.
Basic grip for Ruger Bisley. David indexes heal of palm to butt, which pulls middle finger away from trigger guard and ever-so-slightly retards roll of recoil.
When shooting a single action based on the Peacemaker, trigger finger contacts frame. Squeeze begins as distal digit pivots into trigger. No matter one's anatomy, squeeze always directs pressure staright back into forearm.
Gloved grasp duplicates bare hand except----effect is that of holding a slightly larger grip. Shooter holds same as for bare hand, and Point of Impact should be the same. Throwing lead alone resolves any disparity and trains mind & muscle together for consistency.
Weather finally broke, which allows for shooting at 15 above, rather than 10-below zero. However, a mean wind out of the south, super cooled moist air. Ruger 03 with 2 Dogs recommended black sight. (Ken O'Neill says to add scrotum hook.) ACP cylinder, cast 225 TC BB over 5.5/231 in mixed brass, with CCI 300.
Offhand, 3 o'clock wind, 30 yards.
Ruger 03, same load, 30 yds kneeling, braced against jeep to resist wind.
