Talk about having a bad day.....
"A 56-year-old Canadian man is lucky to be alive today after he was viciously attacked by a bear, then shot by his friend who was trying to neutralize the animal. It was bad enough that the man was attacked by a bear, but then his partner tried to shoot the bear...and put a couple of rounds in him instead! As reported by Vancouver Sun on Oct. 14, the man, identified as Wilf Lloyd, was flown to a hospital after being attacked by the large grizzly bear and he remains hospitalized as of the time of this report.
The man was hunting elk with his son-in-law south of Fernie when he was attacked by a grizzly bear around 9 am Sunday. His son-in-law opened fired on the bear but missed and shot Lloyd a reported two times before he eventually hit and killed the animal.
Conservation officers and emergency crews reported that the man was badly injured during the attack, said David Karn, the Ministry of Environment spokesman. The man was saved because, "during the attack, the victim's hunting partner shot at the bear, killing the bear," Karn wrote in an email statement to NBC News.
"The bear is a grizzly bear boar and it is believed at this time to be the only bear involved," Karn added. According to Calgary Herald, the bear attack occurred in a heavily wooded area. Lloyd was flown by helicopter to Calgary in critical condition after being brought out of the forested area by an ATV. He is expected to make a full recovery from his injuries."

I hope to never find out, but I'd be grateful to my son-in-law for saving my life. Better to get shot a couple times and live than to have no bullet holes in ones body but be killed by a grizzly. I bet he didn't even feel the bullet wounds due to be chomped on by the bear.

My thoughts exactly... but I bet that makes for an interesting story... sitting around drinking beer, ...Dad says... "hey... remember that day you shot me twice with your hunting rifle?"... in front of his buddies... SIL says... "yep... remember that bear was kickin your butt though"

Kinda like flying and landing. Any bear attack ya can walk away from... SIL must shoot like my wife. When we've done the hostage/badguy scenario, she usually hits the good guy a time or two. Something I gotta keep in mind !

It sounds like an old Jerry Clowers record where he treed a Bobcat and it jumped out of the tree into him and the dogs. He was yelling for his nephew to shoot, the nephew said he was afraid to, because he might hit Jerry. Jerry yells back "then just shoot in amongst us, cause one of us has got to have some relief!!!!!"

Similar story took place in Montana, IIRC, only the victim died from the gunshot.

The Montana incident was recently written about in Outdoor Life. In the last month or two.
