There's a very interesting account of a brown bear charge over on the Ruger forum (gallery) the guy shoots it with his Ruger Alaskan 454, he's a very lucky man.

I read that account but I don't think it holds a candle to the story about a badger who was caught eating county fair food while wearing a pair of Chargers Crocs on the lawn of a local church and who died from lead poisoning! ;D

Dick, Those photos show that brown bear to be a bruiser. Others who check this out on the Ruger Forum should also read the Peninsula Clarion article that's referenced there.

Kings6, I'll have you know that 38 snubbie is a serious bear gun! A 900 pound brownie wouldn't stand a chance against it, actually I'd run so fast those rubber Steelers sandals would smoke so bad he'd never be able to see me. ;D Dick

Ok I have read a couple of version of this story in the last couple of days and something is not exactly right. I have no doubt this bear tried to do bad things to this guy and he defended himself with that 454 very well but. Ok you are walking down a road and without any warning, from 20 yards this bear pops out of the woods at a full charge and you have time to go "OH SHIT" draw and fire 3 rounds of full power 350gr hardcast bullets from a very short barreled 454 before he closes on you? I doubt any of the IPSC shooters could do that with all the prep they want and their full race guns. I mean he said it was on him about 1 second and most of them are tickled if they can draw and get the first shot off in .80 seconds from a known and expected start comand! Also where is the bullet hole of the bullet that stopped this bear? His head appears clean of holes but it could be hidden by hair of course.
I'm not saying things didn't happen more or less as he said it did but I think some stuff has been embellished for a better story or to make the chain of event more black and white for the wildlife officers....

+1 on what Bill Fowler said.
My first reaction when reading the account was "wow, he must have had the .454 in his hand!" Bill just put into words what was nawing at the back of my mind. Also don't dispute the event, just the 20 yds, 3 shots of 350gr in one second.
FWIW,
Paul

Reminds me of the old Outdoor Life magazines. They usually had one little comic book looking tale in the back. There was a similar story to this one,...only the shooter didn't use a revolver. Steelers??? First pre-season game Thusday at 8pm est.

It is pretty easy to misjudge the distance and time when the adrenaline kicks in, so I took that part with a grain of salt...The lower jaw didn't look quite right to me and in the first pic there is a small mark which might be broken skin just under the jaw close to the top of the neck....could be the bullet went through the mouth and then into the neck. Given the blood on the front left paw, I figure it must have been under the mouth or body when the bear came to rest, moved later for the pic. Just speculation on my part, dvnv

Fellas, What's the difference ? Pardon the plainspoken language, but when the crap hits the fan, I can pretty well guarantee that if you're the one who's about to be hit with the flying excrement, you won't be using a stop watch or a tape measure. If it seems like 1 second or 3 minutes, 20 feet or 25 yards, then to the one at risk, his mind screams that's what it is. In my neighborhood, we'd say "He done good", and not get hung up on minutiae.
