After reading several articles by a guy with the initials JT, I have decided to fix me up a FA83 with a 7 1/2" in 44 mag with a 2X scope to shoot at deer with. I was wondering if anybody has tried carrying one with swivel studs and a sling? I had a 454 a long time ago with a sling but can't remember a lot about it. Would a holster be better to protect the gun and scope? I really liked Bianci's hush holster for carrying scoped handguns, and then they had to change it and add that belley band.

I think its personal, but for me slings and handguns just don't go together. I think you would be better served and the gun would be better protected in a holster. I would take a look at 7x leather chest rig. www.7xleather.com/chest_holster

As I recall, Magnaport's Mr. Kelly used a sling extensively with his long barrel scoped SAs. Few have his handgun hunting experience.

I had Magnaport install sling swivel studs on my scoped Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 Magnum. I love it.

Over the years, I have had sling swivel studs added to a number of revolvers, both single and double actions. I did the same with some XP-100 single shots, and a couple Contenders. Experience taught me with the passage of time that the revolver had no protection from the elements or the environment as it hung suspended / swinging from my shoulder. A holster or gun rug with a strap sewn to it offers much more protection and leaves the gun just as accessible. As a result, I've not added any sling swivel stud set-ups in about 15 years. Virtually all of my holsters have been custom made, but perhaps the best reason to use a sling on a revolver, at least to my mind, is when that revolver has an unusually high scope accessory, such as the highly specialized Redhawk shown above with an UltraDot and see-through rings, or the FA 353 shown with a Leupold with a Target Turret. Custom holsters can certainly be crafted for such equipment, but the resulting holster could be a bit cumbersome. Today, I usually carry such guns in a pouch (gun rug) with a shoulder strap. Different solutions work for different people.

My 10" guns all have sling studs. The only way to go with those guns for me. I've hauled them over hills, through brush, trees etc, never a day of trouble. As someone else mentioned, Mr Kelly used them and no one here has his resume for handgun hunting for sure so it's fairly safe for me to assume they work fine in all sorts of conditions.

Thanks all for the replies. May just go with a holster. It would seem to offer more protection for the gun and scope.

The 7.5" works great in a holster like the NW Hunter from Barranti Leather. Very comfortable and protective.
My 5.5-7.5" guns I use the shoulder holster for.

Seems to me you're going to a lot of trouble for something to shoot at deer with.

How many threads are holding on the barrel stud?

Here is a 7 1/2" rig for a Super Blackhawk scoped, gives you great protection and accessibility.

If you are looking at a scoped holster then make sure to look at the Wyoming Combo Holster by Von Ringler. ringlercustomleather.com/id59.htmlHere's a write up a did a few years ago after I first got it. Lots of pics. I've packed it a bunch since then and like it a lot. forums.outdoorsdirectory.com/showthread.php/77511-Wyoming-Combo-Holster-amp-ScopedPack it as a shoulder rig or around the waist. One big snap strap and one small belt strap makes it quick and easy to get on and off when layering up or down. No buckles, pulls, etc. Packed it around my waist cross draw for 6 days and about 50 miles last sheep season in the Brooks Range with my large pack. Plan on doing the same this year. Different mountain range this time though

I like that Von Ringler holster a lot. I wonder if he could make one so that you could carry the same gun with or without a scope. Do you happen to know if he can Snyd?
