OK, I have to ask. Are we talking powder coating bullets with an electrical charge or some other form of powder coating? I just went back too USPSA shooting and coated bullets are a hot topic right now. In fact I just loaded up 250 9mm rounds with "Blue Bullets" to see what the fuss is about. 124 grn. round nose designed without a grease groove.

O.K. You guys, go ahead bad abuse me a little. I can take it! I just consider the source, which is questionable at best. Someday you will all be eating your words! Steve

Smirker, many are doing it with a powder coat spray gun (electric charge) & it works with about any color you want, just don't get your hand in front of the gun & get zapped with a electric charge. I'm doing the shake & bake method using a Cool Whip cup with about 1/2" air soft pellets added to give additional static electricity when you swirl them. You add your bullets & paint & swirl hard for about 30 seconds, then up and down hard for another 30 seconds. Take the lid off & use some needle nose pliers to pick the coated bullets out, place them on a sheet of non stick aluminum foil & place in a toaster oven for 20 minutes at 400 degrees. Then take them out, let them cool & size them without lube, then load & shoot. Wear a respirator, that paint powder can fly around & you won't even see it. When using the shake & bake method you need Harbor Freight RED paint, for some reason it sticks much better than other colors. Also the air soft pellets work best if they are black to begin with.

Ok, IF we can get past the mysterious substance Dick found in his new 327 brass, we might be able to get back on loading for the 327 Federal Magnum.
Dick sent me some of his 32 Sixgun Sledgehammer painted bullets that he gas checked and sized .313". With my micrometer I measured them at .3135". He also sent some 45s sized .452" and I measured them at .453" diameter. So, we know that the paint he is using adds a bit of diameter to the bullet. Not that it matters much in the interest of Sixgun Science.
This powder coat paint is "baked" on. Dick tells me they were about 10 BHN, which should expand quite violently at the velocity I want out of my 327 Federal. However, I am not sure that "baking" the bullets does not soften them a bit, more on it here in a minute.
My 327 Federal Magnum is a FA97 5.5". It displays excellent dimensions and is as accurate as I can hold. I also have a 32-20 cylinder for this gun. The 32 Sixgun Sledgehammer fits nicely in the cylinder in the 327 FM but when loaded in the 32-20 the 32SS is too long.
I used FC cases and CCI 550 primers and H110 powder and assembled my ammo on a Dillon 550. I loaded 13.0 grains of H110 to 14.0 grains of H110 in increments using my RCBS electronic scale to double check my powder charges. What I found with these powder coated slugs was that I could not seat a Sledgehammer on 14.0 grains of H110 without deforming the bullet nose. At 13.0 grains there was still a bit of deformation of the nose. I am going to have my seater punch cut flat, but I think the bullet itself needs to be cast a bit harder than 10BHN for MY wants and needs. I did all this while consulting with Sixshot via cell phone. We also had Callshot on the line, but Im not sure he was keeping up. I dont know, maybe he needs more toes....
Anyway, at the range it was just howling. I had a hardtime keeping my chrono from blowing over. Too bad Callshot wasnt with me, I sure I could have talked him into holding it up for me while I did my testing. So here it is, 327SS 13.0 H110 CCI 550 FC Case gave me exactly 1400 fps. The 14.0 grain charge gave me 1497 fps. I only had one of those. All cases fell easily from the chambers and the primers looked fine.
Sitting down at the bench to shoot the FA at 26 yards with the painted red bullets I got a 2" group. I certainly wasnt very happy to see that so I pulled out some of my 120 LBT loads and shot them. I had 4 in one inch and pulled one a bit high. I reported my results to Dick and he told me I needed to shoot enough red bullets to "season" my barrel.
So far, the Sledgehammer has performed as I had predicted. 1400 fps is easily achieveable, but remember to WORK UP with care. I dont see the point of the powder coat. Seems like a lot of work to save on a stick of bullet lube. You still gotta size em, then eat five gallons of Cool Whip so you can shake em, then bake em, and on top of all that you gotta season your barrel??? From my perspective, if I put something in my oven I am going to EAT what comes out of it.
I also think the Sledgehammer needs to be cast a bit harder than 10 BHN. Working with Sixshot on this. He is going to pour some pure Lynotype bullets to see if they will seat on a stout charge without deformation. I hope he shoots some more water jugs and recovers a bullet or two. Ole Callshot could prolly use a bath anyway.....

The 327 with the Ferminator bullet is working great with 13 grs of H110, I think 14 grs is just too much stress on a bullet at this hardness. If you are shooting HP's there's always a trade off between hardness & speed. A 327 at 1400 fps with a 135 gr HP is a beast! I'm blowing ground squirrels in half, you can't pick them up for a photo, you have to use a shovel. If that speed isn't enough then I need a bigger gun, not more velocity. When switching bullets, lubes, powders, etc. it always takes a few shots to "season" the barrel before things really settle down & show you what it will do, Fermin knows this, he's just wanting Callshot to steady his Chrony while he blazes away at it. Fermin has came up with a bullet thats really going to be a winner, he put quite a bit into designing it. Many probably don't know it but he attended the same gunsmithing school in Colorado that my son did & he's really sharp when it comes to all things gun related. Several years ago he pretty much switched to handguns only because he never liked a cartridge with a NECK! Don't know why!

You forgot to mention Callshots spelling Dick. Your proof reading skills need sharpening....
Let me know what the pure Lyno bullets do for ya Dick. Im betting they are just as hard on meat as the others!

I'm sure I can spare a quart or two of Old Spice for Callshot if it'll help him with Lula Belle!
I'm working with my 327s as well right now. I'm doing 4 different batches to see what happens. I'll be chronoing my loads as well. I just gotta sneak away from work a bit to do all this!

Good one Snappy!!
I got my Miha mold out yesterday and cleaned it all up. Gonna heat up the pot this morning and drop a few.
I think Dick is taking Callshot out this morning to interview a bunch of beauties for a upcoming romance....

Women are like kittens. When they are young they all look good, BUT the older they get, the uglier they get and at our ages they have pretty much all reached their limit. So have most all of us. Thanks for trying anyway. Steve the dear hunter!
