just got my super blackhawk hunter back from jack. did a grip job using claro walnut and added a custom picatinny scope rail. we talked on the phone about doing an octagon barrel but that never materialized. (i may still have him do the octagon and shave down & bottom taper the length of the scope rail to fully personalize this gun) he also did a trigger job - nice n' smooth now.

Lost Coyote, Why did you go with rail instead of using the Ruger integral base on the barrel? Is it simply a matter of wanting the scope further back or is it something else? Thanks,
Eric

yes, that's it. personal preference to have scope further back. jack also told me over the phone that he has seen scope rings "pop" off the existing mounting system. btw, the scope rail that jacks crew build is ROCK SOLID.

Lost Coyote:
Congratulations on a beautiful revolver - The functional shape of the grip is great but the Claro Walnut Grips are outstanding!!!
Thanks for posting an excellent photograph on the finished Ruger!

not sure if it's finished or a piece in work.... pondering an octagon barrel and tapering that scope rail (sorta photoshopped below) but upon comparing the two pictures side by side, i may just leave well enuf alone. i do have a super blackhawk bisley that could use a 500JRH conversion - LOL only thing, is the bisley grip hits my first knuckle. i am not sure if jacks grip mod on a bisley (giving another 1/4 inch of space between knuckle and grip) is enough for me. have not heard wits range report of his custom 500JRH. maybe the $$$ is better spent here?

range report for the modified ruger SBH 44mag... doing 2-3 inch groups at 35 yards consistently using the bench to support my hands. trigger is as smooth as glass and the grip fits loike a glove. i think i will send my bfr45-70 into jack for a trigger job as well. what do you guys think about doign an octagon barrel & trimming the scope mount as shown above on this? since it shoots so well, i may as well leave alone?

Whitworth, Wondering what the drawbacks are to the bisley frame? Thanks! John Roberts

Whitworth, Wondering what the drawbacks are to the bisley frame? Thanks! John Roberts The only gripe I have ever had with the Bisley grip frame is the propensity for my middle knuckle to get rapped by the trigger guard. This only happens in th harder kicking calibers for me with a stock Bisley grip. With my JRH modified Bisleys, I will only occasionally get nailed and this is usually when I am on the bench. My .500 Maximum will not tag me when shooting offhand. I love the grip angle of the Bisley and the control it affords. But, to tell the truth, Huntington's modified plow-handles are even better (for me) as they have all of the good attributes of the Bisley (a more vertical profile), great control, and plenty of space between your knuckles and the trigger guard.

How is the Ruger integral rail attached? Would it have to be milled off? It's a single piece. You could remove it with a lathe. Seems like a lot of work. I think if someone wanted an octagon barrel, you'd need a whole new barrel.

Thanks seancass, I was thinking the same thing but since I've never paid attention to the Hunters I didn't know for sure if they were screwed onto the barrel, brazed/silver soldered on or what.

Ohhh, now THAT has my wheels turning! Remove the rail, cut the barrel to 5.5-6.5" and fill the holes. Stainless filler screws maybe? Must stop thinking...
