Excuse me I'm new here. Somehow, that didn't sound as good as it did in Quigley.
Are there any reasons why a Super Blackhawk grip frame couldn't be reshaped into a Bisley of sorts. It looks like a lot of real estate could be removed from the backstrap and especially the heal. No it would not be a Bisley, but it would be close I think. A file on the grip frame and then again on the grips and you'd be good to go. Has it been done, are there any pictures? Thanks for the consideration, Steve.

Ahh, a shade tree gunsmith after my own heart! Welcome Paul P.S.: I'm sure it can be done, just not by me. P.S.S.: Sorry, I just noticed that you didn't say you were going to do the work.

YES !!! BUT....why ruin a perfectly good grip frame that'll now need custom stocks of weirdo size etc etc etc, plus being worth about ten cents on the dollar when you go to sell it ? There are a myriad of gripframes around for sale cheap in comparison to a ' custom job'.

Typically I'd be in full agreement with you. However the gun in mind is a forever keeper. A very good friend did magical tricks to it and did all free gratis. I may get buried with it. But on some level I agree, I'll investigate other frames and check with Huntington. My concept would fairly easy, even the current grips would only need real estate removed to fit the remodeled frame. Thanks all.

The grip frame mods don't detract from the value IMHO. The mods make the Dragoon grip viable for even the heaviest recoil, plus you will have a custom set of grips (the mods are performed in conjunction with a first-rate set of custom grips) that actually fit your hand. It is well worth it IMO.

I always reshape the grips to my style. It has improved things every time. However as of yet I've not tackled a grip frame. Seems like much could be done to improve the super grip if the heal was put on a diet and rounded ala Horton shape. At this point I'm working up the nerve to do it and was hoping someone else had beat me to it. Huntington it would seem has on some level at least.

Steve, he has been performing those mods for years and they just flat-out work. Here is a photo of an XR3-RED that is modified by Huntington. I am a dyed-in-the-wool Bisley man, but Huntington's modified plow handles are hands-down my favorite grip frame style. All of the benefits of a Bisley (the vertical profile), with none of the drawbacks.

Now we're cooking with gas! That looks like what I conceived in my small mind my super would look like. Only, mine is a Dragoon. Wish I even thought I had the ability to change over the Dragoon to a rounded trigger guard like yours. Thank you, perhaps I need to get more serious about Huntington. Steve

fun to see you post one with an octagon barrel....
as i just sent my super blackhawk hunter (not bisley) in for a grip extension... and left a few open comments for him to contact me regarding some extra work....
want to locate the scope rearward as is done on BFR's or FA 83s. (SBH hunters have scope mounts on the barrel itself - too far forward for me) and left an idea to change out the barrel for an 8 inch octagon - that would look kewl.
so we shall see. need to see the cost.

Do you have to send him the gun or just the grip frame ?
How long does it take ?

Really nice looking piece there Whit.
I have been working up the courage to try the same kind of grip frame mod myself, ...even got a spare XR3-RED to work on. My holdup has been that I am not sure I can get the right shape with simple stock removal. Seems like some stock may need to be added in the "corners" and I have no way of doing that.
Is that grip frame shape achievable by simply removing metal? A picture with the stocks removed would be real helpful.
