Killed in 2013 at 25 yards with a .270 rifle.......I know. Shoulda had my .45 with me. Was headed to a different stand at the 2nd gate .that morning and stopped to check the wind at the 1st gate. Wind was better for the stand at the 1st gate. By the time I was settled in at that stand the wind switched and was completely a 180 and was blowing the wrong way or so I thought. About 7AM I heard some splashing behind me in the slough. Wind was at my back. A doe came out of the water. I watched her get to 15 yards and I looked back and saw the biggest deer I've ever seen. I reached for my rifle and it wasn't there. I turned and found it on the other side of me. The deer was broadside as I eased the barrel out of the blind. I flipped the safety forward on the Model 70 and settled in a pulled the trigger and it made an huge SNAP! I hasn't chambered a round. My first thought was what do I do? I quickly decided to make a smooth cycle of the bolt. Not fast or slow. I did. The deer raised it's head and looked at me. Boom this time and down he went. I made sure he was down. Then I have thanks and called my Pop to come help me get it out. I wouldn't leave it and had him come to me. Currently it is at the taxidermist getting mounted. I gave the meat to those in the area that don't get to hunt.

No buck fever at all..........just another deer in the woods! Ok, I'm lying! I had one picture of this deer on camera from the previous year and none during the season. I was hunting one that was similar in size but had no idea this one was even alive. The only thought I had was "I gotta shoot'em"!!! That deer just had a bad day and I got lucky. My Pop always says that stuff will get you killed.......
