Pardon the oil on the gun, it's been a safe for 10 years. Just got home from liberating it. Apparantly this was one of several built to copy the Model 50. It's a 36-1 the area under the rear sight is blued in a matt finish that matches the rest of the top strap. Gun has a great action and has been fired very little. Found a new Creek or as we call them around here "Krick" fishin partner. Just wanted to share in my good fortune.

Squawberryman: "Kricks" are a little too high for fishin at this time. Wait a month or so for the water to go down and clear up. Usual fare in tributaries around here are Rainbows and Brookies (trout). High mountain free running streams produce cutthroats. Local reservoirs and rivers have a lot of smallmouth, which are my favorite.

Thanks Frank I need to take a better picture of the piece as I have added some aftermarket grips for a better hold.

You may want to sell it for $1500 and buy a 60-4 (adjustable sights, 3") for half that price (if not less). That 36-1 is a rarity! Carry it a couple times and you'll shave hundreds off the value! Here are a couple of model 36 "Chief's Special Targets", as they were termed, 1966 & 1975 vintage. The 3" is new in box:

ACTUALLY, the designation of " 36-1 " was specifically for the 3" CHIEF'S SPECIAL. My model 36-1 3" most definetly had the J-frame sights added after the gun was manufactured. IT is a superb shooter and I used to shoot the dickens out of it regularly.

I got the weapon ANIB and have put 60 rounds through it. I need to do some research on this gun as I already have a 60-4. I bought this one for it's "neatness" factor. Kinda like a cool pocket knife or watch when I was a kid. Didn't really need it but it sure is a dandy to own and shoot. A couple of "collectors" on the Smith&Wesson forum say it's not a Model 50 so henceforth is only worth what a 36-1, bull barrel fix sighted J frame would bring. I have the 2nd edition of the Smith and Wesson catalog but it doesn't list this model as anything special. Obviously I have work to do, and the 36-1 goes in the safe. Not quite sure where to start.

Hmmm, those "collectors" seem to be wanting to get something for nothing, as a buddy of mine sold his NIB 3" for $1400 two years ago!!!!

Sounds like I need to go to the Surce and letter it, and see where it goes from there! Thanks for your input everyone.

About 20 years ago, S&W made a 36-6 which was a three inch full lug blued 38 special with adjustable sights. This was pretty much the same revolver as the 60-4 except for the stainless feature. I have the stainless version and it makes a wonderful little trail gun which is quite pleasant and accurate to shoot. And if you want the same thing in a light weight version - try the 337 which is the three inch with adjustable sights and weighs around 12 ozs.

THE S&W M36-6, and it SS version too, were the TRAIL MASTERPIECE 38 sixguns.

"She will sit in the boat all day and never complain". I'd a married her too ! On a backpacking weekend in the hills I crawled outta my sleeping bag and saw hers was empty. Found her washing her hair in the creek. Water temp was @ 40 degrees. I proposed the following week. steve
