Let's see some Brass Grip Frame guns and get some schooling as well! I sure like the looks of em and think I might need one someday so might as well learn something about em! I know I've come to the right place.
I know Ruger offered a SBH Dragoon style, did they ever make a regular BH Brass grip frame? What about brass bird heads? I know John Linebaugh did or had a run done of brass Bisleys. Any other custom makers out there?
What about other SA makers and brass?

The only brass grip frame Ruger ever factory produced was in the square backed, Dragoon style in the Super Blackhawk size. There have been aftermarket brass grip frames produced by others. And, I have seen some that were customized after they were built. Into a birdshead style. The Ruger ones are collector pieces, so expect to pay more for one of them.

Rugers brass ones were installed on SBHs, Old Armies and a very limited number of OM 357s,41s and 45s. Normally a Ruger MR3-BD frame will run $300-$325 by itself without the wide trigger. Other makers of brass aftermarket frames included BNR (sp) Caravelle, and Qualite. Qualite also made brass birdshead frames for old and new model guns as well as a few brass bisleys when they were able to get John Linebaughs mould for a run or two. There is also Power Custom who makes the nicest of the brass grip frames in the two piece Colt style which can use one piece grips. They also used to offer them in birdshead but no longer. If you want a brass birdshead from Powers you buy the normal gripframe and reshape it to the birdshead. This is according to my conversation with Randall Powers lasts week. He was trying to find mea brass birdshead back strap but no luck so he said just reshape the normal one I have on hand. It will be going to a machinist friend later today to do just that. Powers frames can be used on either NM or OM guns. Brass frames do an a nice contrast and some nice weight to the gun.
I can shoot pictures of a Powers standard two piece before reshaping and a Qualite birdshead if you want.

I, for one, like brass mounted Single Actions. Here are mine: Gun on left is a Three Screw Super Blackhawk with Ruger brass dragoon style grip frame. Next is a Colt Single Action Army with a brass backstrap from an old 1851 Colt Navy. Next is a Uberti Stallion, straight stock. And last is a Hy Hunter Western Six Shooter with a Uberti trigger guard and a Backstrap from a Hawes Western Marshal. I'm slightly proud of the grips on the Colt and the Hy Hunter, I made them myself! Bob Wright

For your information, here is work in progress. Fitting trigger guard: Fitting backstrap: Polishing to match: And fitted. Had to buy shorter backstrap screw. Worth the effort? I think so. Bob Wright

Squawberryman:
Have you got a better photo of that sixgun? I'm interested in the barrel (rib?) and frame area.

Snyd, just take a short jaunt south and I can hook you up. Have a few lettered and handful of factory added brass frames on old model 45's. If you get a hankering, I can dig through parts box, may even have one I could send north if you wanted. Local shop in Kenai had a fairly priced new model Blackhawk, 4 5/8's with aftermarket brass plow handle. Nicer stocks if I recall correctly. Not a collector, but nice shooter grade. If I am remembering right the brass frame was a little proud at the ears but easily fitted by someone with a little skill and finese.
Let me know if you want me to go run by and take a photo of it for ya.
Will

Thanks guys for all the info and pics.
Will, big thanks for the offer! I really do need to head your way one of these years. I haven't even got my first custom yet and am dreaming about the next one!

Or get a brass frame and roll yer own Squawberryman, If you would be so kind as to add this gun to the "Blue Print" thread that was going on a while back... I would love to know some details on this piece. No disrespect to any of the other fine pieces of iron around here, but that is the finest piece I've seen! Most beautimous, you do have a keeper.

Here is the BNR on an older NM 45 of mine. I have only seen one other BNR grip frame online. I believe it was a member here that had it for sale.

I think it is called "Trapper" or "Bullseye" brand springs. Good stuff. Smaller wire and less preload will get you a great trigger. No amount of bending or unhooking legs of factory springs can compare. Modified factory springs fail to reset the trigger before they get as light as the spring pictured.
