A friend who works at the LGS/range mentions to me Tues. night that he might be wanting to sell his Uberti SAA clone in 45 Colt. I remembered handling this gun when he first got it off an Uncle Henrys (a local Want Ad type flyer) a few years back. It had the box, as well as a receipt with it from the smith that had done an action job/tune up on it. I remembered that the action was pretty slick . Soooo when he offered it up (somewhat reluctantly) to finance another recent purchase , I bit.
Keep in mind, these types of non NM Ruger single actions are NOT easy to come by here in Mass. I'd love a Colt SAA someday, but on the rare occasion they pop up, they are priced well above market value in a normal State.
Anyway... long story short, I did the deal with him, and proceeded to fire off about 20 rounds at the range with it. My pet 45 Colt load of 7gr HP-38 under a 250gr SWC hit right to the sights off hand.
This is a 4 3/4" "Old Model" black powder style frame with a bulls eye ejector, first gen style sights (although the rear may have been opened up a little. Better sight picture than I'm used to seeing on 1st gen Colts. It's got the Uberti "charcoal finish" which as we know , isn't really, The faux case colors are also kind of faded but it still looks pretty cool IMO. Fit and finish seems pretty good all around, and the cylinder throats are sized correctly. A .452 bullet is a nice fit going through with a touch of resistance. A few handling marks on it, but no turn line.
The smith who did the action work on it turns out to be Jim "Longhunter" Finch who seems to have a pretty good reputation, and quite the Cowboy Action shooter. I WILL say that this thing has the skinniest main spring I've ever seen!! Skinny to the point that reliability seems like it might be questionable but I DO also have the original springs as well as an extra base pin retaining screw. It's also had the forcing cone cut to 11 degrees, along with the tune job.
Pretty happy overall. At $400 I think that's a very good price given the scarce supply in Ma.
THanks for letting me share my happiness !! Here's a couple of pics.
