This text is reposted from the "Show me your single shots" thread I had started over in the "Rifle" section.
Wanted to post some pics of my new as of last night "sort of single shot" as well as a few of my recently acquired Win. 94.
Here's a repost from that thread along with a bunch of new pics.
So I kind of got myself a single shot, and kind of didn't at the same time. I've been out looking around a High Walls, no.1's, Handi Rifles, Sharps etc. and I kept finding myself fascinated with this old sporterized Springfield 1898 Krag. It's was at the shop down the street from me, and I'm friends with the people that run the store, so I'd been admiring this little Krag for a little while. Lyman 57 rear sight (which I love) Lyman banded front sight with a gold insert, 22" barrel ... could be cut down, could be aftermarket.. not sure but nice polished older blue, military stocks with the cartouches and 1898 dates nice and clear, not too banged up, just a neat little rifle with a bit of character.
I'd find myself going around the store looking at the higher end stuff but kept coming back to the Krag. While handling it the other day, I opened and closed the action, and it was without a doubt, the smoothest action I'd ever felt. Feel the trigger and it's very nice. Nothing like any military trigger I've ever felt. I can feel myself starting to think this may need to come home with me.
Did a good bit of reading on Krags, and found out that there's a lever that shuts off the magazine, making it essentially a single shot. Hmmm.... a single shot is just what I've been looking for! Also read that they seem like cast bullets (another big plus). Thirty cal. lead seems to have a bunch of options that are reasonably priced.
So I ended up going for it. Got the rifle , a box of Remington factory ammo, and a set of digital calipers all for $350. Seemed like a pretty fair deal.
Not exactly what I had in mind, but I found this little Krag really winning me over. Weird the way things work out, and it was WAY less than I was planning on spending."
and now some pics.
I find it pretty cool that the military markings have survived 115 years and through the modifications.
...And now a few pics of the Winchester 94. My father acquired this one a while back as part of some kind of trade. I think he put a total of 10 rounds through it. He told me a few weeks back that he didn't want it anymore, and wanted me to have it. Offered to pay him market value for it, but he'd have no part of that. It's from 1942, just like my dad. This one's a "keeper" in 32 Winchester Special w/ a 20" barrel.
Now to get some 30-40 and 32WS dies, and some lead!!
