Whew, I'm glad to see the substance of this thread! For a second, I thought everyone was going to have to hear the legend about Fermin in leather and cause them all lack of sleep as its caused me!

I just received my latest from Mike. After seeing his artwork done on leather, I asked him to reproduce my seal that I used while in office. the seal encompasses the three things Osage County is historically noted for, Osages, cattle, and oil. As you can see (despite my poor camera), Mike did an excellant job.

Nice rig sherrif! I really like the way Mr. B personlized it for you. And thanks for attempting to bring this thread back around. Buncha hi-jackers.

While I still don't have my dream rig from you, I do enjoy the pair of shucks I've already gotten. Your work is excellent and I call you a craftsman. (In these mountains, an artist type is reserved for the tootie-fruity weirdos in Asheville in the River-Arts district. Those folks TRY to be craftsmen but fail miserable. They are basically liberal arts college types who view the world through rose colored glasses, and believe in the utopia created by whatever they smoke. They drink the Kool-Aid fed to them by the g'vment, as they accept their handouts. They call themselves "artists.") You sir, are a true craftsman. Thanks for sharing Mike. Not entirely true. You might make that kind of remark and people who haven't spent any time in the Asheville area might believe it, but in reality, the area is full of fine artists and craftsmen who do great work. East Tennessee and western NC was my stompin' grounds for many years, I know of which I speak.

Nope, I stand by my compliment to Mike on him being a true craftsman. I was born & raised here in WNC, so I have a lifetime in these mountains, AND dealing with craftsmen and folks who call themselves artists. To a hillbilly, the term artist is reserved for the crowd I mentioned in my OP. But the folks who make stuff like Mike does, they are considered craftsmen. I'm not saying we do not have OTHER craftsmen & women around here,, but they aren't known as artists.
In any event, Mikes leatherwork is some of the finest around. Period!!!!!!!

I agree with your compliment wholeheartedly, it's the derogatory remark I have a problem with. I was raised up in upper East Tennessee and roamed the whole ET/WNC area all my life so I don't think you have any unique perspective on what "hillbillies" think, only how you personally perceive things. Putting down other people doesn't give more power to your compliment. Walk in the little store down at the end of the road where I used to live and say the word "hillbilly" and you'd risk a stompin, or worse. My apologies to Mike for taking up room in his post, but it's hard to let something like that pass without comment.
