I know we all have our definition of what constitutes a BBQ gun. Some are all pimped out and some are more subtle. I have a slightly different definition...
About a week ago, I had a trip scheduled last minute to cook for some friends. I touched base with my buddy that lives out that way to let him know I was gonna be in the area and see if he wanted to come out and hang out. Any of you that do much smoking know that there is a lot of "down" time in long cooks. I hoped he would at least show up to eat the next day. Scott met us there about 7:45 or so that night and we had meat on the cookers starting about 8:30pm. At that point, we started our usual dig through the gun bag routine. I always bring something else he hasn't seen and he does the same. Scott had just finished looking at a 500 Linebaugh and I was going over a really sweet little 45 from Linebaugh that he brought along. Scott handed me a 29 next. He has been shooting alot of 29s and 629s the last few years so it was nice to see his newest addition. The first thing I noticed about his new sixgun was that it was not a new one. Not by a long shot. The first thing I noticed was a cool set of Coke bottle stocks and a deep beautiful blue finish. I saw it was a 4 screw gun and when pressed the cylinder latch and looked inside, I see that its a M29 no dash. Gorgeous sixgun. It was about this time that I hear Scott ask, "so, what ya think?". I was just about to start with my questions on the sixgun and tell him how cool it was when he broke in with a statement that went something like, "Well, I hope you like it, cause it's yours". I was confused at this point and looked up to see that Scott is holding a camera. I don't know what the look I gave him said but he started explaining the whole thing. But....before he got that far, he explained to me how I had been tricked even that day!
For while now, Mike Barranti and I have been talking about one of Mr. Elmer's holsters. It was a really cool holster. Very classic carvings but one of the things that really stood out to me was the strap itself. It was contoured and carved. The cool thing about it was that the strap followed the carving line rather than breaking the mainseam line. Very subtle details but made it a really cool holster. Mike and I had talked not long ago on the strap and tried to get the dimensions right using the pics from the original holster (Thanks JT!). During my trip out west (about a 7 hour drive, especially hauling a cooker in tow), Mike was sending me pictures of the long awaited holster progress. Every now and then I'd get a picture and then he would ask if I still thought he should do something in particular like dye the background or something and I'd say yes. Well, he finished it not long before I got to my destination. I was amazed, the finished product exceeded my expectations. He didn't want to sell it and I couldn't blame him, I thought it was one of the best I've ever seen. I tell you that part to explain that for the first time ever, I felt like I had input in the holster, Mike was asking as he went, it was great. Now back to Scott....Scott then asked, "Did you see that holster Mike worked on today?" I responded with a "yes, its the finest I've ever seen". He started laughing and said Mike had finished that holster several days earlier and the holster was currently sitting at the post office in Kansas City waiting to go out for delivery at my house on Monday! I was amazed....I couldn't believe what my buddy had done! He asked me questions and my opinion making me believe I had input only to find out that it really didn't matter what I said....I should have known then, something was up
In this world, I feel that a man's family and friends are two of the most important things you can have. Money can't buy either one! I have been blessed with great family and some of the most unbelievable friends you could ever imagine. My friends have actually become part of my family over the years. I have been amazingly fortunate and recieved far better friends that I have ever even come close to deserving. Scott explained that he and some of my other buddies had gotten together and found/purchased this M29 for me to accompany the holster mentioned above. The set is amazing together. I couldn't wait to get home the next day and have both pieces together. I unfortunately had another 16 hours of cooking to go. By the time I made it home, I had been running for 41 hours on 20 minutes of sleep but was kept going knowing that red and white package from the PO would be waiting. When I got home, you can imagine how happy I was to find a nice "green" slip waiting on me! I had to wait an extra day because the didn't leave the package. hahahaha Oh well, it was probably one of the first picked up the next morning.
Fermin, Mike, Jeff, Mike, Rob, Scott and Dur...thank you from the bottom of my heart. Truly undeserved and uncalled for. This gun and holster will join a very small group of "special" sixguns in my safe. It will be used and hopefully will be broken in very soon. Your generosity amazes me. Those that know me know that there are few times I could be considered "speechless" but when Scott broke the news to me, my hands started shaking and I didn't know what to say to him, which is very foreign to me I feel that any man that has his family and friends is a blessed man, to have family and friends that I do is even beyond that. I know every day when I see my family and have that little boy run up to me in the mornings and then have my buddies call during the day just to check in and chat that I am one of the most blessed men to ever walk this Earth. I thank the Lord everyday for the opportunity to experience it!
Hopefully, I'll have a chance in the next week to get it to the range and burn a little powder and if times allows, an unlucky hog may have the chance to see the little gem!
Here is what I now call the BBQ gun. The sixgun is a late 1959/early 1960 4 screw M29. The blueing is so deep looking, it looks like a black chrome. The hand polishing that they did at that time is amazing, you really have to look and hold it just right to even see the two pins that they used in the rib just under the front sight base. They just don't make them like this anymore. The gun is TIGHT, like really tight, fit is amazing. I don't think that it was shot very much over the last 50 years. The trigger pull is incredible. Its a special sixgun.
I didn't wear it to a BBQ but it was recieved at a BBQ Thanks again boys and I look forward to seeing you all again before too long!
