I'm considering having Mr. Bowen install his V-notch rear with XS white-dot on my 686 MG conversion to .41 Special.
I have no experience with this sight system and am hoping for your thoughts. The revolver will predominantly be a trail / PPP.
Thanks,

IMHO this V notch and brass/white bead system is for shooting big things up close and quick... I played with one in the early 80s on a Redhawk and have gathered in FAs and Reeder guns with these type sights... They do not stay on my guns. There is no right or wrong here. Realize that so much of the sight configuration depends on what you do with your guns and what your expectations are......

I don't care for express style sights on a handgun. They're just not any faster and less precise. I'd love to have a 686 Mountain gun!

WHat I have routinely had done was to have the square notch in the back of my J frames wallowed out with a ball end mill to match the contour of the round groove in the top of the topstrap. THen have the front blade milled off and one of the bead front sights dovetailed in (with the XS big dot being the most recent and currently preffered) for a very rapidly aquirable sight picture. Kind of a if you're in a hurry put the dot in the ditch and shoot, if you've got time fine aiming is not impossible (at least as fine as you can get with a J frame Smith) so I can see what you're thinking about in my head, I think, and IMO it ought to work well, but keep in mind "long range" work may well become out of the question.

I like the arrangement in a "dangerous 4 and 2 legged critters up close" kind of gun, and I think it would be passable for a hunting revolver too... Seyfrieds ultimate game gun was equipped with a V notch rear blade, as I recall. Works fer me.

Seyfried's No 13 had a square rear notch IIRC. They did look like express sights though in side profile. He didn't even like express sights on a rifle.

Ah... I stand corrected! Its been quite a while since I read Seyfrieds stuff... I knew the front blade was a wickedly sharp hooked pa'tridge, but in my minds eye, all I could see was the side profile of the rear.

The professional hunters in Africa use it on their stopping rifles & like it. I had one on a .458 one time & it was very fast & accurate enough. I've only used one on a auto pistol one time & I think I could have gotten used to it. Frank

I had Freedom Arms' "V" rear with round brass pin front on one of my 475s. I removed it in favor of square notch rear with square ramp front.
Anyone who wants my FA "V" front/rear assembly, a take-off from a six-inch 475, let me know.
