Guns at the National Museum of American Indians, adjunct Smithsonian Institution, the Mall, Washington, D.C.
* Colt 1873 "Peacemaker." * Flintlock over/under pistol. * Colt 1847 Walker. * Winchester 1866, presented by President Ulysses S. Grant to Chief Sitting Bull. * Springfield 1873 Trapdoor; U.S. Grant/Sitting Bull 1866 Winchester; Colt Dragoon; Winchester Model 1873. * Colt 1836 Patterson; Colt 1860 Army; Colt 1873 "Peacemaker." And partially exposed Colt revolving rifle.
Would someone help identify material used to make the Peacemaker grips? Giant clam shell?
Thanks to Lee for posting, David Bradshaw

While commonly called pearl, technically "mother of pearl" as it is made from the shell that contained a pearl. Beautiful stuff. Unusual today to find it in big pieces suitable for grips. Eagle Grips still offers genuine pearl grips.

The Colt grips are probably made from Pinctada maxima, the South Pacific pearl oyster that grows to impressive sizes.

Thanks, Jayhawker and Petep.... the Peacemaker grips appear to be one-piece, a standard practice on cap & ball Colts that extended well into the Peacemaker era. I could not see behind the guns to tell whether either of these grips may have been two-piece, with a blind hole (doubt it).
The steer or bull carved on one grip has inset eyes which appeared to be turquoise.
Some of the rifles in the exhibit had rawhide reinforced stocks and were embellished with brass studs, etc. David Bradshaw

cable.... as you just posted photos of replica Colt 1836 Patterson and Volcanic/S&W lever pistol, both in .22 LR, thought you’d like to see an original Patterson, in remarkable shape for the life it must have lived. David Bradshaw

Kevin.... check out third photo from bottom, Winchester 1866, presented to Chief Sitting Bull by President Ulysses S. Grant. A rifle unlikely to appear at auction. (Lighting of exhibit very poor for photos.) David Bradshaw
