The roughest country I hunt(ed) in is sheep country here in AK. Walk-in backpack hunts for 7-12 days 10-20 miles off the road or from the airplane. I never carried a backup gun. Everywhere else I go whether it be camping, hunting, fishing, hiking, berry pickin I pack the 4" 454 Redhawk. and the bug dope!!

Hell yes, that’s the plan. Just gotta get my shooting technique and load sorted, but I’m going to give it all I got. Are you in BC, or AK? Or did you draw a tag elsewhere? Would love to hear your tale I live in Alaska. Can get a goat tag OTC every year. The first time I took a revolver was a bfr 454. Boat ride 30 miles, then mountain bikes about 8 or 9 miles up an old logging road. Then hiked in from there. Probably another 5 or 6 miles through the brush. We found goats. Weather didnt workout with the time we had. Next time was a March hunt on Kodiak. The goal was for my buddy to get one first since he'd never hunted them. Lots of snow that year. Weather worked pretty well until we got his goat out. Then it warmed up way too much and made the snow too soft. Wasn't freezing solid at night anymore, so we couldn't get around. Too steep for snow shoes. Got to about 275 yards from a small billy. Not close enough for me. Great thread you guys. Welcome wyomingnimrod! You probably have some neighbors on this forum! Ya, Rickie, I hope you get a shot at a goat this year! It took me three hunts to get a Ram with my FA 454. You can do it! A few years back I was with 4 other guys hunting Kodiak in Nov. One guy had a bear tag. They were all rifle hunters, I was packing the 45 Colt Bisley Hunter with 2X Weaver on it, 355gr wfns 1220fps. After getting our 15 deer and one bear another guy and I went after the goats. We got to 250ish yards and well, he was packing his 338. With the terrain I think it would have been possible for me to get within 100yds but he was pretty antsy to shoot one so he did. It sure was a blast hunting those little blacktails though!

The 2X Weaver is a great scope if you can find one. They quit making them. Weaver claims it can take 1000s of rounds of 454. I shot 1000's of rounds of heavy 45 colt under mine in my BisHunter, 355gr and 1200fps. Same size/dimensions as the 4X Leupold. I kick myself for selling mine.

I killed many whitetail and mulies with a 243 in Montana years ago. I knew a guy that shot nothing but the nosler 100gr in his in Montana as well even for elk. He said it just pokes nice hole in em. He used to come to Alaska to hunt moose but used a bigger caliber for them. I'd have used a 243 for my Dall sheep rifle over the last 20 years if it weren't for the Big Brown fuzzies running around up here. Low recoil flat shooting makes for a great mountain gun with little chance of scope bite in awkward shooting positions.

I love shooting at 100yds or beyond. I have shot 12" steel at 100yds off hand with my 5.5 500L for fun. Won't take a shot like that at game with that gun. With a 2X weaver or 4X leupold on my 45 Colt BisHunter or FA 454 it's a different story. I've tried shooting my FA 454 with a friends leupold 2.5-8 but anything over 4X is too much wiggle for me at 100yds. I'm better with 2 or 4X. I kick myself for selling my 2X Weaver, great scope. FA 454 with 4X Leupold with 240gr at 1900 fps I've killed many a paper plate at 150-175yds 12" steel beyond. I shot this Sitka Blactail on Kodiak at my max range of 110 with this gun and load/scope combo. 45 Colt BisHunter, 2X weaver, 355gr wfn, 1200fps. Seated on a hillside, forearms on knees. I won't take a 100yd shot at game off hand. Here's a target with that load/gun/scope. Ot past 100-110 yds accuracy with this boolit fall apart and it shoots a pattern. It's a 100yd combo. Same gun/scope, 255gr Lee rnfp. Same gun 4X Leupold 270-SAA 280gr. I worked up this load for sheep hunting but couldn't find a legal ram.

Me with the The Last Ram and FA 454 the day before my 61st Birthday. Most of you have probably read the story by now. DIY walk-in backpack hunt about 15 miles in in the Alaska Range.

I know this is WAYYYY late but i missed this almost a year ago! Congrats!!! Couldnt happen to a more deserving hunter. If you find yourself down Kenai way once more we would love to have you & your bride over for coffee again. We are no longer in the same house but the same area. Thanks Vance and others it was quite a hunt for sure. Here's a pic of the mount. We have haven't been on the Peninsula for a couple years. If we make it down this year with the camper trailer we'll give you a shout.

I've never had a problem with mine feeding. Even when rapid fire at a griz!! I had it Mag-Na-Ported. It really tamed the muzzle flip and twist/torque. 325 is pretty stout in that light wippy barrel. I have no complaints about my Kimber. Great gun and cartridge.

My Kimber 325 shot just like that out of the box with Winchester factory ammo, 200gr accubonds. I remember 3 shots, one hole. I took my first ram with that load. So did my partner on the same hunt when his gun/reloads jammed up on him. I was then able to duplicate that factory load, 200gr AB's 2950ish fps. I call it my "Little 8" since it basically duplicates the original Rem 8mm ballistics. I'm not sure what load/bullet the 6.5 sheep hunters are running. Whatever the sweet spot is I suppose. Dall Sheep aren't that hard to kill, think whitetail. If it weren't for the big brown fuzzies in the woods I'd have shot a 243 over the years. 2015 The last time I hunted with the Little 8...

A lot of sheep hunters here in AK are going for that 6.5. I have had a Kimber Montana since 2005. 325wsm. I love it I've killed sheep moose and griz with it. 7lbs all up with Talley LW Rings/Bases and a 2.5-8x36 VXIII Leupold scope and nylon sling. It's seen hundreds of miles of backpack sheep hunts, ATV moose hunts, banging around is a super cub you name it. Still holds zero and puts 5 shots sub Moa at 100yds. I haven't hunted with it for a few years but might have to moose hunt with it this year. I suspect the 6.5 would be a few ozs heavier since it has a smaller hole in the barrel but can't say for sure.

Yes Mr Rowen does fantastic work or in this case ramstastic! and like Mark says great to deal with. I love the look of Bighorn on stainless. Dall on blued guns.
