I'm sorry for bumping my own thread, but this is one of my favorite topics. Which of Your Own guns do you really know? It kind of goes along with Lee's thread on 100 yard shooting.
Hopefully some more members will chime in. I went to the range today and confirmed that the 44 Mag Bisley Hunter mentioned in the original post is still one of my most accurate guns. I'd be foolish to not pick it for reliable hits. I need to go make some ammo for it...

I'd have to bet on the FA 454 in my avatar, it's proven to be accurate from 25-100 yards and feels like an extension of my hand. I should probably work on my 50 and 100 yard shooting some more to see what it can do.

You wouldn't want to bet against my FA 454 I'm just a mere mortal, and shot his 454 at 100 yards. It made me look good. With Zeus at the wheel, the groups were so tight the crowd here might call me a lier if I gave a size.

My S&W 686 with 8 inch barrel would be my instinctive choice out at 100. I've had it for decades and know it well. That said, my tuned up Ruger Bisley 45 Colt with a 255 hard cast load is proving great at 75, which is the longest shot at my improvised range at the moment. Going to be clearing a little land soon to fix that.

If scoped contenders and a rest are allowed, a scoped tc contender super 14 in .223. In big bore revolvers, I suspect my bone collector .460 should do pretty well after I've shot it a bit.
Without scope or rest, i'd take my chances with my sw pc 5" vcomp in .44 mag.

Of course, I strongly suspect that some of the members here could out shoot me with my own guns with BOTH of their eyes closed! :-)

EXCELLENT group especially with it being the first FA you ever tried!!

My 14" 6.5 JDJ contender. :.) I know that don't count so I guess my 10" Dan Wesson 44 Mag. if I had to use open sights. If I can use a scoped revolver it my FA 10" 454..

Out of my current lineup, I would have to say it is my Ruger Blackhawk .44 Special, but it is often surpassed by my 7.65 Parabellum chambered Mauser Luger with its 6" barrel. I keep meaning to take the Luger into the wheat fields to frighten coyotes, but I'm easily distracted by farming instead.
The two most accurate handguns I no longer (sob) own were a 3-screw Ruger Single Six (6.5" barrel and drift rear sight) I acquired in 1972, along with an amazingly accurate SS Remington 1858 replica I picked up around 1978. I had read an article in Shooting Times about the Remmie replica and hustled down to the local gun shop to pick one up. It was no great shakes to easily hit rocks at 50 to 75 yards with that .44 cap & ball, but the little Ruger was a guaranteed 100 yard gun. Of course that was much younger eyes. I still have that issue of Shooting Times, and there is another Remington replica here too, partnered with three Single Sixes. All shoot well, but accuracy is a lot like catching fish. We remember the glory days of our youth with kindly retrospection.
Swapped the Remington towards a Colt 2nd generation 1860 Army that was beautiful but had no where near the accuracy. The Ruger was lost in a home burglary that made me see the light regarding gun safes.

So a freind says "Hey i bet you can't hit this 12" round gong at 100, 150 or 200 yards with a handgun." You say, " Oh yes i can!" What gun do you reach into your safe and pull out? How often do you expect to hit it? If you pick a single shot, you have to also pick a semi-auto or revolver(the single shots are cheating!). I had to throw in 150 and 200 because 100 yards isn't long distance for some handgunners. Just take your pick. Out to 100 yards, right now, i'd probably grab my Ruger .45 Bisley Old Vaquero. Beyond that, I'd grab the Bisley Hunter .44, mostly because it has a scope. At 100 yards, i'd like to not miss, but i'd take 50%. Beyond that, a hit or two out of six would be allright for now. I havn't shot longer ranges in quite a while. That's upsetting to me! Whacha'll got? seancass.... concluding an IHMSA handgun silhouette match at Deitz's range in New Braunfels, Texas, round about 1980 or so, a bunch of us set out to Creedmoor the NRA rifle silhouette ram at 500 meters. Stepping to the line cold, Jim Whitcomb, of Austin, tucked into Creedmoor with his Wichita bolt action single shot pistol, iron sights, printing 4x4 Sierra 168 BTHP into four inches on the ram's chest. The present writer followed with his Skip Talbot-built XP-100 in 7mmx308-1-3/4", loading the Sierra 140 Spitzer Flat Base. Both round loaded with Hodgdon 4895. Cranked my micro from normal ram @ 200 meters 8-clicks, to 33-clicks, elevation screw about to fall out.Don't revall width of the post front sight on the swinger ram at 550 yards, but it measures .075-inch on the gun. With Whitcomb's unpainted shots splashed on the chest, we elected to train the the ram's head. 4x4 Sierra 140's fell into 4-inches of brain pan. As well as the IHMSA crowd, a couple of NRA rifle silhouetters witnessed this display of handgun reality. I would love to have a revolver the equal of this. David Bradshaw

Thats easy, my well broke in .44mag SBH 7 1/2" from the early '80's. The REAL question is, whom am I gonna have shoot it ? No longer consider myself a good shot. I've met a young man from the P-Burg area that I might draft. When he's not making babies, he does some shootin'.
