I've got a wolf tag; there are wolves where I hunt elk and if I see one in range, I'm taking the shot. Fortunately in Montana you don't have to eat a wolf if you shoot it! I've been chuckling at some pictures I've seen of successful wolf hunters packing the whole critter out - if I get one all that's making the trip back to the truck is the hide with the head still in it. That's a big dog to carry any distance.
My question is what to do with it then? Wolf rug? Bleach the skull for display? I don't have room nor money for a full mount.
I know of folks who have sold hides for some decent money; perhaps I'll see if my taxidermist would take it on trade towards my next elk mount...
Any ideas?

My YHEC group needs a wolf hide for wildlife ID practice! If you don't want it, we will take it!

If you can't afford a rug right off just get it tanned. I'd do the skull also.

Just tan it and beetle clean the skull. Wold fur is frost free, makes excellent face ruff for hoods in sever cold climates. Makes a cool Eskimo parki or coat for you or the woman in your life. I have a peace of wolf skin , that I sewed onto the collar of my Capote. You could go Roman style and attached the full wolf hide to the shoulders of a warm coat. Personally I'd do that and skip the rug

I would go with the rug and skull.

Definitly mount the skull. And take plenty of pictures of what will most likely be a once in a lifetime event. When a person says they "don't have room" for a full size mount, then talk about a rug, they forget the fact that the rug takes up every bit as much floor space as a full mount. The cost, of course, is another matter, but a full size mounted wolf is a darned impressive trophy.

I was lucky on a sheep hunt in Alaska several years ago to get 2 wolves. Got the hides tanned, and the skulls bleached. You will need to seal the skulls with something though, the teeth on both skulls are splitting now. The hides still look great though.

Rug and skull, but a full body mount would be awesome!

My calculus teacher in high school shot a beast of a jet black wolf (this was in 1979) and had it made into a rug and it was incredible. When I dump one that is what I will do. Neighbors have seen two around the place in north Idaho.

Wolf hides look nice even hanging loose from a peg, so would tan it for sure and can always have it rugged later if you want. Certainly beetle clean the skull, a trophy in itself.
The buddy I just back from King Salmon fly fishing with is a big wolf hunter/trapper. He has two life size mounts, a rug and more than a dozen hides just hanging. The life size are cool--but not my cup of tea. I think the rugs are nice though.

You gotta tan the hide! Whether wall hanging or rug you can decide later. With the skull just make sure you keep it where you can locate all the teeth when they fall out. Looks a lot better if all the teeth are intact.

Chili should be do-able, just sayin'. Dern near everything is edible someway or other. But yeah, get the hide tanned. Friend just got back his 9 1/2' Brownie. Covers the couch end to end, extra hangs over. Just amazing. stevemb

A buddy has an Alaskan wolf hide from his fishing guiding days and it simply hangs from a peg near the ceiling in his gun room - the tail nearly touches the floor! It always catches my eye when I enter the room...
I bet the bleached skull would be a great paperweight on the desk!
