An absolutely fascinating piece of 50s hardware. Already mounted on my 1957 Winchester 52C... More pictures soon...

The preciseness and repeatability of the 1955 BALVAR scope will define it as a novelty or a working scope on my 52C.

It is VERY bright out. I believe this what we used to call sunshine.

Beware! There is some talk in the movies about a bright light that you are supposed to walk into...

The lee shores, down wind, down weather shores sometimes suffer from being close to the Great Lakes. That lake effect snow comes in off the lakes in "bands" and pummel certain areas is well known. From say , Lake Co Ohio, east thru Penn and into N.Y. state is a ridge only a few miles inland. Moist air coming off the lake is forced up and over this ridge. The chill it gets from higher colder air forms clouds. From the ridge inland, south, we get an average of 40 less days of sunshine than those close down to the shore. There is a band of vineyards, orchards, nursery stock on the ridge and down its north facing side. They take advantage of the extra sunshine and the top soil left by the last ice age, the receding glaciers. My family had a 180 acres of vineyards, orchards above rt90 in North East Penn.. During the Depression my Dad, as a boy picked cherries and peaches there and slept in the barn. Meeting and working for his future Brother-in-law.
