Upper/Lower much like the FN/FAL the AR-15 platform hinges for easy access to the mechanism for cleaning and maintenance. The AK has a removable dust cover over the top of the action for cleaning and dissaembly. Because two piece system on the AR15, we can switch em around like legos. As long as the specs are all compatible...Happily, most quality ARs are built to the same specs, or close enough that bolt carrier groups upper receivers and lower receivers can be interchanged between brands. or one lower , a serial numbered part can be used with multiple different uppers to switch calibers or configurations. It's not an either or world I like em both and M1A and FALs and G-3s...

I have Stag Arms #6 Varmint with 24 " heavey barrel, shoots 3/4 out to 200 yrds with 50/60/75 Grn bullets and Varget powder. 1/8 twist. I like the life time warenty too.

I have 7 AR's - one pistol, a couple off the rack models from Bushmaster & RRA, and the remaining home builds. They all shoot great, but the home builds are the most accurate probably because I bought better barrels for them than come on factory guns. When you buy good barrels they usually come with matched bolts, which generally alleviate the possibility of head space issues. All of my custom barrels are 1/8 twist with Wylde chambers.

I'm along the same lines as Kraig with what I have and what I have built over the years. My Krieger barreled guns are incredibly accurate. However, a buddy has a kit gun that we put together from J&T I think that shoots lights out at any distance that you want. I think it is running the Wilson target barrel which incidentally is the same that the RRA NM gun used/uses also. The cool thing on the AR is they are usually very accurate no matter what you are using and just get better with tweaking.....

Appreciate all of the comments. It's a done deal. I went with a mid-length 7 twist Daniel Defense M4V7. Had what I wanted, just a click over my budget and goes a bit under 6 1/2#. It will be waiting at my FFL's when I get home in a couple of weeks. Need to order dies as I just realized I only have an AI set. Off to Graf's...

Good deal Box. DD makes good stuff. I've used lots of thier parts over the years. I don't know if you'll need a small base die set or not. I can't remember what I've used.

Daniel Defense is a nice working and shooting rifle. A standard die set works just fine.

I only use a small base die on once fired brass that I did not shoot.
AR's are a great platform. Not a whole lot they can't do. 22LR to 50 BMG all possible on the same lower. Still trying to decide between a 6mmAR or a 458 Socom for the next upper........

I am hoping this doesn't turn into what the wheelgun thing and the Mauser thing and the SxS thing and the .... uh oh. ;D My advice - sell it cheap before you take possession and run away fast! They breed like sixguns in the safe, accumulate accessories by the handful, and judging by your beautiful collection, you'll appreciate high quality optics. Then throw in toys like NV, Class 3 stamps for suppressors and SBR's, and the sickness is on you STRONG. Welcome!

You made a fine choice. Excellent reputation and I think you will be very pleased. Let us know when you start wanting reloading advice. That 7 twist will prefer the heavier bullets.

I have 62 gr TSX's on the way and will use CFE223 which I used for my 8x57 load development to start. Also have H335 (the winner in my old 223 AI) and TAC as well so I should be good to go.
Just another comment. The internet is a wonderful thing. I bought via Gunbroker from here in Kazakhstan in the late evening (11 hours ahead of Texas), the transaction closed via email 2 hours later, FFL transfer via email completed and the rifle shipped by the time I woke up the next day and 4 "days" after clicking "Buy it now" the rifle is sitting in my FFL's shop 7000 miles away. Wonderful. The guys I work with here, who are from about all over (29 nationalities at last count) but the US, are just stunned and a bit envious of the lone American and the freedom I have.

Daniel Defense makes a good rifle. I was going to suggest a Colt 6940, base on your requirements, but the DD will be fine. I always recommend a solid, "name" for a first gun of a given type. If you don't like it, the names like colt, DD, or Rock River will re-sell in about 2 minutes in Texas.

As far as accuracy goes with 1-7" twist barrels and heavier bullets, my old Colt Match H-Bar with a 1-7" twist didn't do better than average with 68-69 grain ammo (Federal GM Match) or handloads. Go figure, but the old Samsom/IMI 62 grain soft points would shoot at or under 1/2 MOA all day long. I worked up a load with some bulk 64 grain Winchester power points (also bought in bulk) and was set. My H Bar also did fine with 55 grain fmj's. Dang I miss that rifle.

My Rock River Predator pursuit is a 1/2" gun. I have no complaints about and aspect of the package.
