Yup, still no replacement for placement. Whit, you should run for President on THAT platform! ;D Or... another option... if the glove don't fit you must acquit! Haha! ;D

been there and done that with a rifle as well. a few shot with .416 rigby come to mind as well as the .416 taylor Yep that deer with half its insides sprayed out still ran about 25 yards. The doe that went 6' up in the air and turned a flip still went about 30 yards. You just never know. reflex264

I once shot a small Texas doe at about 100yds with a .45-70 that was slightly quartering to me. Blew her insides smooth out and she drug them through the brush for over 100yds before finally bleeding out. I would never have believed it if I hadn't shot her myself.

I do not expect DRT results from anything. Have put Brenneke slugs right thru the hearts of several deer, they still got a 100yds left in them. With that being said, time alters things. Today, I cannot condone Keith walking his hits onto the target as he did for many of his long range hits. In his time, well, OK.. But today, NO ! Please do not read, or re-read his books and think this is OK.. The game, and public lands are as much mine, as yours, and I am NOT OK with that kinda shooting. If you missed the whole critter with the first shot, do really believe the next will go thru the boiler room ? Do I have to believe it too ? IMHO.. stevemb

I got spoiled Steve. I have hunted Texas sized deer for many many years with the .25-06. I have killed well over 100 deer with that round. Out of all the deer I have ever shot with it, I never lost one and never had one take more than about 5 steps including a few huge South Texas deer.
Is that a magic round or am I just that great a shot? No and Hell no! I just take shots I know I can make and hit 'em where I was taught to. For reasons that still escape me I switched to a .270 a couple of years ago. Every single deer I shot with that round (using different bullets too) ran for a minimum of 75 yards or so. Every one!
I'm back to my favored .257 and unless hunting outside Texas on other game will stick with it for my little Texas white tails. That doesn't mean I won't still use handguns and leverguns, but the majority of my hunting from box blind will be with old faithful.

Markbo, obvoiusly, you are "dialed in" My comment not applicable. My point is, I'm an American. I do not hold with royalty, celebrities, and such. You have one vote, I have one vote. Nobody on pedestals in my life. I feel free to voive opinons on anyone. Heck, even the president of OUR united states. OK, lets not go there. stevemb

Markbo, On that doe, I'd believe it. I've spent too much time on my hands and knees with a flashlight in my teeth, looking for blood. My best buck, I finished by drowning, and it was him or me. stevemb

Yrs ago a friend had 40 acres smack in the middle of what is called "Frog Alley" Decendants of runaway slaves still live there, the swamp is ringed with Amish farms. Lots of food and cover ! Thn I still worshiped at the alter of high velocity and had a steamy load using 200gr XTP's. The problem here is that mature bucks still weigh north'a 200lbs after field dressing. I made a 30yd crossing shot on the walking buck and he dropped his head and came at me, maybe just best way to get rack thru brush ? A head-on shot turned him left, back toward the river I'd just heard him splash outta. I ran to the trail he was fast disappearing down and sent a hasty shot after him, figuring he was hit somewhere already. He dropped over the bank outta sight followed by a huge splash ! When I got thru the brush to the bank I could see he'd cartwheeled down into the river and was not visible. Gouges in the far bank looked like he'd re-crossed so I hiked out to vehicle and drove around the block and hiked in to find a big sycamore that I used to mark the spot. This took an hr.. I found a big brush pile behind the tree, flood debris. The buck bailed outta there like a big rabbit and fell/belly slid like an otter, right back into the *(^$#@^! river. Once he had all four feet on dry ground on far back, I shot twice as fast as I could, and he stumbled and came back, rolled over and fell into the river. Watched him thrash and roll down around the bend. Still awash with adrenalin I plowed brush downstream and got a bend ahead of him and found a limb out over the water and waded out holding the limb. He came in view and I adjusted my postion to match his. Occured to me I had one hand on tree limb and water to armpits, SBH and such was under water. The buck was loosing bloody bubbles from his side when he got to me, so I grabbed his rack and used my feet to hold his head under until he quit kickin'. From there to getting the tenderloins into a skillet, would be a whole 'nother story. The 200gr XTP's didn't hold together or penetrate much. My bad choice at that time. stevemb

I got here late, but Dick just about nailed it. I've read Keith since I was a young man along with Skelton, & Askins. I've shot several deer & a couple of Bear with a six-gun. One bear was taken cleanly in Alaska with a 5-1/2" .45 Colt Colt SAA. I've done my own penetration tests with .45 Colts (Colt Level loads) & the .44 Special with cast bullets. Penetration with cast bullets at moderate velocities is substantial & not to be underestimated. I believe everything Mr. Keith wrote was fact that he did as he stated. We need to remember shooting feats that we take as almost impossible when done by people who are experts are not impossible. All we need to do to reinforce that is to watch Bob Munden on impossible shots. I have also shot a six-gun at long range enough to know someone who possesses skill way beyond myself can make hits at almost unbelievable long range. I've never met Mr. Keith, but thank him for all he has done for the hand-gunning world & for fostering my interest in six-guns. Frank

If the Grand Old Man was wrong . . . . . . well, then I've wasted a lifetime headed down the wrong road . . . What am I going to do with all my Keith books? Hell, I even have 2 copies of Sixguns . . . man, was I ever duped! All those hours wasted looking at the Old Man's signature in one of my copies of Sixguns, it's not inscribed to me, but that book had been in his hands. What was I thinking? Thank goodness I gave my 3rd copy of Sixguns to my best friend (he had somehow lived without a copy!) years ago. Big bullets make big holes even at moderate velocities and penetrate from here to Kansas . . . . what a newb I've been to believe in that hogwash . . . . I hope I can talk one of the experts at the LGS to take my guns in on trade for one of those new fangled super-short-double-belted-hyper-speed-magnums . . . . He may have gotten the new information from one of the 16 year old clerks down at the local gun shop. You know, one of the experts. Now THAT'S funny !
