I've been re-reading "Sixguns" over the past few weeks, and am forced to admit that Elmer was wrong about the 44 Spl & 44 Mag. For most of his life, he claimed that a good 250 gr 44 cal. semi-wadcutter at 1100 fps is all the power you need for large game, up to the size of elk. Well, I was told today by an authority that it is irresponsible to hunt even deer with anything less than a 454 Casull, the 475s & .50s would be better, but are prohibitively expensive for most. The 44 Mag should only be used to a maximum of 50 yards by a skilled marksman, and most people can't shoot well enough to qualify for it's use.
It's all so simple. How could I have been duped by the ravings of a guy born in the 19th century, and who never attended college?

Oh, brother. I know a guy that takes deer cleanly with a Glock 20 in 10mm. He uses the 180 grain Hornady XTP-HP at about 1250 - 1300 fps and has taken deer from 85 to over 110 yards.
I used to knock down 200 meter rams with a 4-inch S&W 686 in 357 mag; the Keith 170-175 grain SWC over 10 grains of Blue Dot.
I s'pose this also makes John Linebaugh wrong about the old 45 Colt taking deer and antelope cleanly with a 255 - 260 grain slug meandering along at 900 fps???

Relax, Boxhead. I think I sense the subtle sarcasm in 358156hp 's tonque-in-cheek posting.

He may have gotten the new information from one of the 16 year old clerks down at the local gun shop. You know, one of the experts.

Oh great! Now I have to trade in all my 44Spl's...The "country" deer I hunt are usually behind the times a little so I should have a few years before they hear this new information. That will give me time to save for a 454 or 475. Would a 500 S&W in the massive X Frame be acceptable also?
I'd appreciate it if the experts could keep this on the down low while I save my pennies Thanks for the heads up...I will burn my 2 copies of "Sixguns" tonight.

Sounds like someone else noticed that sometimes even a 475L is no match for a 100# doe and her will to live long enough to be hell to find after a good hit...... if found at all

How did you know he works in a gun store? He has to be right, you can't get a job in a gun store without being an expert. He also knows who killed Kennedy, but the Government made him swear to silence, upon penalty of life imprisonment.

Was Kennedy killed with a .454 C TOO? I heard lots of that stuff when I worked in a gun shop too - from both sides of the counter. More armchair commandos out there than you can shake a stick at. They're the same ones that tell you what an ineffective, feeble and dowright anemic cartridge the .30-06 is. Oh, and single action revolvers are only good for puching paper or cowboy action shhoting
;D
"Yeah, sure. Whatever dude!"
Max.
Oh, instead of burning my copy of Sixguns, it'll stay on the shelf along with all Taffin's books, Bowen's book, etc - but strictly for comic relief.
