You know what they say... the fastest way to a mans heart is through his stomach... or his lower GI tract anyway!

Its the THS--Texas Heart Shot is what I grew up knowing it as. On whitetail, they even have a bit of a bullseye on that end to aid in aiming.

Speaking the THS of TLS on whitetail. I shot a buck in Montana years ago broadside with the 'ol aught six. The buck turned to run, I shot him again and he piled up. I found where I hit him the first shot low but could not see where I hit him the second shot figuring I hit him in the spine. Well, I rolled him over to gut him and found a nice little hole right next to the bung hole, the bullet went up through the passage in the pelvis and never touched the bone! Made mincemeat of his innards but didn't ruin a bit of meat. The 'ol THS/TLS did the trick that day for this Montana Boy!
The one I hit a few years later with the 7mm with the same shot didn't fair quite as well... It was the Montana Mncemeat shot!
Hey Will, I'll be getting back in the swing of things and casting up some more of those .512 440's with a little different alloy. Have you had a chance to load any of the first batch yet?

Yepper, all loaded and my vaquero Linebaugh loves' em. Already shot up most of them. That's the combo going with me to Kotz the end of the week. So I hope to be a long-term buyer of those boolits.

So would anyone feel "under gunned" carrying a 475 Linebaguh as a side-arm, and a .338 Win mag as a primary hunting weapon, in Alaskan interior grizz country? Not hunting brown bear (only black bear and wolf) but they (interior grizz) are apparently present in the unit we will be hunting in (unit 20) North of Fairbanks... My 18 yr old son will be carrying a 510 GNR side arm and a 300 Win Mag as his primary weapon. I'll be loaded with 440g WFN at 1,350 in the 475 Linebaugh and my son 435g WFN at 1,250 in the 510 GNR. Advice, thoughts, affirmations?

Here in New York we refer to that shot as aiming for the circle steaks. Took a shot like that once at a wounded buck who was heading for a swamp. When the 12 gauge slug hit him he went down as if struck by lightning. Field dressing him was pretty messy. Took out the larger veins and arteries that run under the spine, and if I remember right the kidneys were among the missing. when we skinned him before butchering I found the slug lodged between the hide and the front of his chest.

Advice, thoughts, affirmations? No Problem! I'd say you guys are loaded for bear as long as you can shoot straight! My backup gun is a 4" Redhawk 45 Colt that I converted to a 454 loaded with 355gr wfn's at 1300fps. Your 300 and 338 are perfect Alaskan rifles. What are your bullets loads? I killed a small Interior Griz with my 325wsm (8mm). 220gr Gamekings at 2800fps. 165yds, complete pass throughs. We were moose hunting and he was headed towards our tent. I intercepted him Beautiful hide so I rugged him. Ya, lots of griz in unit 20. So many that they got rid of the resident requirement to purchase a griz tag to shoot one. I think they should allow non-residents to be able to shoot one without a guide in GMU 20 if they are moose or caribou hunting. They eat lots of moose and end up in peoples yards. We need to thin em out. Lots of stories to tell about griz in and around Fairbanks. When are you coming to Fairbanks? If you have time maybe we could have a cup of coffee. Shoot me a pm.

Dates not set exactly, but we will be in Frairbanks for a couple of days on each end of a 7 day hunt about an hour by float plane North/North West of Fairbanks... Tentative timing is the first half of June 2013... Won't have dates set exactly until January some time... will let you know more when things firm up a bit. PS- also bringing my take down recurve bow as well... PS- NICE grizz, beautiful hide... be he makes a nice rug!

Ah, a spring hunt. Cool. I thought maybe you were coming up this Sept for moose as well. Are you guys hunting with a guide over bait or doing spot and stalk for blackies? Lots of guys shoot with bows over bait. I'm hoping to get one over bait with my 45 Colt BisHunter if I can make the time to do it.

Here are a couple of .475'd bear: The .338 Win Mag. with 250 gr. Nosler Partitions is superb, but there sure aren't any flies on the .475 Linebaugh, either!

The hunt is a mixture of spot and stalk for bear/wolf in the am and hunting over baits in the pm... hence the diversity of weapons.... the rifles will be for the spot/stalk where shots tend to be further... and the revolvers and recurve for the bait hunting... where shots will be 25 yds or less.
Ken- NICE bears! Where were those taken?
