Consistent 3" groups with a fixed sight Ruger is damn good shooting. I've never been proficient with Vaquero sights. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time" Lee, I failed to mention that I had the front sight serrated and the rear sight opened/deepened up a bit... helped a lot with my groups and I can get on target from a holster a lot faster now. She'd be one heck of a CAS gun!

SOP for every 45 I get is to open the throats, cut 11deg FC, heavy hammer spring, light trigger return spring with sear work. Some may run fine without it, but even the good ones get better from it.

The forcing cone cutter from Brownells isn't that cheap, but you can use it and sell it for nearly what you have in it, especially if you get the basic kit and only get the 45 pilot(the one that slides on the shaft and guides it at the cutter so you don't have to rely solely on the cone at the muzzle). As far as springs, they are cheap enough, and the trigger work is free as long as you have a set of screwdrivers and a stone.

Lee,
It appears the free bore is what dialed it in. Agree? Curious as to how you selected the depth of free bore?

Free-bore and the cone being re-cut helped considerably. I also believe the gun fire-lapped itself to better accuracy (the bore definitely smoothed up). 3/8" is what Interarms used to do on their Silhouette Virginians. Those guns were tack-drivers so I did the same amount on mine. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"

It seems quite a few are cutting their own forcing cones. What isn't clear to me is whether or not this is with/without setting the barrel back, gaging the depth with a plug gage or other method, etc.
It was my impression most Ruger forcing cones were already at or near maximum when leaving the factory so it there enough meat for a quick re-cut?
