Sounds like I will have to try the 41 with some good cast bullets.

There seems to be a bit of a cult following in Maine regarding the .41 magnum. I know a number of bear hunting guides who favor the .41 Magnum for their back up work. Some have stated that they believe the .41 Magnum kills better than the .44 Magnum.

I shot a black bear last week in Idaho with Montana Bullet's 240 WFN. It was quartering away at 35 yards and I aimed for the off-side shoulder. The bear ran 10 yards and rolled for 5. When we were skinning the bear, the guide bet me that we would find the bullet. I knew better. The bullet had center punched the shoulder leaving a neat, 41 caliber hole. I don't have the experience of many on this forum but the 41 has gone through everything I have shot with it. Montana bullets are excellent.

OK, somebody is going to have to explain this to me... is it just that the 41 mag is a slightly smaller caliber but at similar or greater velocity to the 44 mag, so it punches a slightly smaller yet deeper hole? Can it be that simple? If the 41 out penetrates the 44, then why isn't the 41 more popular than the 44? (availability of ammo and components aside)... confused...

It doesn't necessarily make a lot of sense to me and it doesn't neatly fit into a box of explanation, but it consistently seems to happen that the .41 mag out penetrates the .44 -- with similarly profiled bullets -- same thing seems to happen every time I test .45 Colt bullets against the .44. Very odd and very unscientific -- I know.

I had a Blackhawk in 41m. It was very impressive with heavy hardcasts. I had a mountain molds 270g wfn mold that produced somereal thumpers. When i gave the 41 to my brother, i gave the mold to Montana bulletworks. I'm not sure if he's listing the bullets yet. They're very similar to one that buffalo bore uses.
