Curious here. My hands are rather insensitive. I have 185gr DEWC in .44spec cases over 5,6, and 7 grs of Unique. I can just tell the difference between the 5 and 7 gr loads. My question then. Using the more common 240-250gr SWC in .44spec.. If you loaded it up to a 1000FPS,with Unique or anything faster, then compared to, say, 2400 powder loaded down to a 1000FPS. Do you think your hands could tell the difference between the fast burning powder, and the slower ? Am sure I could not. Again, curious. steve b

That would be an interesting experiment. I tell you, the biggest difference I have felt recently is between IMR 4227, and any other slow burning powder (H110, AA9, 240), in the 44 magnum. Same bullet weight. I'm using a full case of 4227, slightly compressed, under a 240 or 250 grain bullet, and it just doesn't have the sharper impulse that the others have. I can mix the loads in the same cylinder, not knowing which one I'm about to fire next, and I can feel the difference.
I have not chrono'd the 4227 loads. Could be they are slower. I'll try to do that next time out.

I am glad you brought up the IMR4227 ! When me'n 3 friends all came of age, we went out and bought handguns. I bought a single-six, then a SBH. They bought M29 Smiths. In the interest of having a "Bear load", we played with the Hornady 265gr bullet. My friends just stuck it on top of the same charge of 22gr of 2400 that we shot everything else with.I thought they were pushing things a bit, in their Smiths. I tried IMR4227. I could not tell the difference, but they could, and switched powders for that bullet at least. Hmmnnn..gotta go check my manuals ! steve b

I can easily tell the difference between 4227 and H110, maybe not so much in a 44,but in my 454,480's and 50's it is very apparent. Hammer describes it perfectly and yes in most cases the 4227 is going slower.
