The general rule of thumb is the higher the pressure and/or velocity the more beneficial a gas check. Also, a gas check can be beneficial with softer alloys at higher velocities/pressure. Here's a good primer on the subject www.lasc.us/Fryxell_Book_Chapter_10_GCkorPB.htmA 500-525gr at 1000-1100fps at around 35000psi does not indicate the "need" for a gas check. It would'nt hurt but proper boolit fit and alloy should be able to result in an accurate, lead free load being able to be developed. Not having to go with a gas check is one less step in lubing/sizing and less expense. 1000 .50 gas checks are about 50 bucks. Not that big of a deal unless you can't find them. I could get a checkmaker made though and make my own. But a good plane base boolit simplifies things. All else being equal, the plane base boolit will weigh a little more than the one with the gas check and leave the same case capacity NOE makes this mould in 2 or 4 cavity. .513, 500gr gc. This boolit or close in a plane base or a Ballisti-cast equivalent closer to 525gr. I may do a custom design from www.mountainmolds.com with a little larger meplat. A 510gr seems to have a nice ring to it I may contact Veral Smith at LBT and see what he thinks. noebulletmolds.com/orders/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=44&products_id=76will, I'm sure we can work something out. I'd like to find someone who's been casting and shooting a 500+gr plane base though before I settle on the mould.

You guys may be wise to get into a mold. I love Cast Performance's 525 WFN but they aren't cheap. I've been paying $62/100 and I've shot 1,700 this year alone (1,500 in my Max and another 200 in my Linebaugh). -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"

Ballisticast 440gr plane base that he bought that I now have. I've been doing some casting with it and he's done some loading and shooting with the boolits. I do know that I want a 500+grainer though. Lee, can you get a couple measurements off that CP 525 boolit for me? Meplat, nose length and total length? I"d appreciate it. thanks Perry

Well after reading about the 525 grainers, I decide to take a look around at if there are any other manufactures who make 525's besides cast performance. Cast performance is a premium bullet and a great one in that fact though they are not cheap as mentioned. Well looking around I see Rim Rock makes a 530 grain with the same basic profile though 82 dollars a 100 . Well I have shot beartooth bullets for a couple years and have leaned toward there product for the sizing option and they are so price competitive and they do make a quality premium product. I gave Marshall a call over at Beartooth and bring to his attention the path that Whitworth and Lee have taken the 500 linebaugh and Max, well he was very pleased in the information and is going to look into producing a 525 grain .512. It won't be overnight but this is another avenue for the 500 linebaugh and max shooters who don't cast.

It'd be great to see Beartooth offer a 525 gr slug. Variety is always welcome and if he needs load data Whit and I have plenty. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"

When ole Ranger Rick was in business up there in Alaska, he made a nice 515 grain bullet with a gas check. I've still got a few and his measurements are:
0.511 diameter 3-grease rings total length to include gas check is 1.002" to 1.005" Length from base of gas check to top of crimp grove is 0.615" Length from top of crimp grove to nose is 0.390" Meplat is 0.405"

I was using the MT baldy 510's and was very happy, however their website now says they are in hibernation. I'll be going to the CPB 525's when my 500L from Jack gets here.

Ya, a buddy of mine bought a couple of his .475 moulds off him. I suppose he sold this one with the others he sold to a guy in the lower 48. I think NOE made his moulds for him. I think I'll see if he stil has it.

Lee, can you get a couple measurements off that CP 525 boolit for me? Meplat, nose length and total length? I"d appreciate it. I'll measure one when I get home tonight. The Cast Performance website shows 0.400" nose length and 0.380" on the meplat. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"

Yeah, it's a WLN profile so it should be around 80% of diameter or thereabouts.

Cast Performance lists it as a WFN, but the meplat is a tad smaller than their 435 WFN (0.380 or 74% vs. 0.410 or 80%). Doesn't really matter, we're splitting hairs between the two. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"

Nice work, Lee! That is a great bullet for the Linebaugh. We never used H110 in load development, but it looks to me that you are on to something that will work well! Nice gun, by the way....... ;D ;D Is that the gun you had, or did Lee just make hissself one?

The SRH in 500 Linebaugh was built by Jack Huntington for Whitworth. I bought it off of him earlier this year. Great piece. Extremely slick action and accurate as hell. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"

we took the old NEI 470 SWC mold and moidified the nose to a Keith profile Ended up about 510 grains(?). Shot well, kicks pretty good too. I think we ran them at 1050to 1100. Hard to remember as it has been some time. Not real sure the extra weight is needed, we have shot a 450 keith through lots of buffalo
