It took about 2 days to get through the exibits. Of course those who know me can figure why. I'm accused of the ability to talk to much, even to a fence post!HA I had several suprises there, seeing exibitors that I actually knew. One is Greg Koschtial for Cody Wyoming. Greg is a jewler who custom made a thumb ring for my wife, while we waited and let us watch him do it. We hit it off instantly and always look forward to seeing each other the next time. Then I was happy to see Mike Rintoul had his booth there. Grizzly Cartridge. I met Mike at the Linebaugh seminar in Cody many years back. So while catching up on the lost time, and hearing the story of Mike's Girraffe hunt, I noticed this fellows name plate that sounded familiar.....Who like me was busy in conversation. After having Mike's son insure this other fellow wouldn't leave. We got to a break in the conversation and introduced myself to... WHITWORTH. My day is made and trip indelibly etched in my mind. After fininshing up with Mike went and spent about 2 hours with whitworth over at the NRA booth. For those of you who don't know by now, He's a really swell guy. It was such a pleasure to finally meet you Brother. You are welcome at my campfire anytime. Hope you finally get some rest after the show. More later, gotta go All the best Todd

Giraffe hunt? I know it's done and that's fine, I guess. But personally, I think I'd rather shoot puppies. Much, much cheaper, too.

Giraffe hunt? I know it's done and that's fine, I guess. But personally, I think I'd rather shoot puppies. Much, much cheaper, too. Very difficult animal to hunt. Not only are they huge in stature, they come equipped with their own look-out tower. They are hard to stalk. Mike Rintoul took his with his .500 Linebaugh Redhawk (by Bowen), and his PH was extremely impressed with its terminal performance (and Mike's shooting!). Todd, the pleasure was all mine! It is nice finally putting faces to names and also finding out that some forum members are even cooler in person! Hope we can all get together some time in the future and make some noise with our handguns!! Don't forget to post a picture of your boy's new revolver (or yours for that matter!)!

I won't forget the picture!
I used to thing similarly but now as I'm told "the rest of the story":
Giraffe, the third densist bone structure on the planet. I don't know what #2 is but #1 is a Rhino skull. To get to the heart, you have a bit over 2 inchs thickness of hide on the forequarters, about a foot of meat, then the leg bone lays nearly horizontal with a thickness oof 5 inch guards the direct path to the heart, then the ribcage, and finally the chest cavity.
When he stated he wanted to take one with a pistol, the PH said "Cowboy, we don't do things like that with little guns" (or something to that extent) Next AM, every PH in the camp was armed with doubles to back him up. He stated it looked like they were looking to curb an invasion of some sort.
I'll let Mike tell the story right. But in the end, everyone in camp came along to see this "Cowboy" try to take a Giraffe with a handgun. When he did successfully and the PH witnessed the resulting terminal performance, he invited Mike to hunt whatever he wanted to with a handgun.
Sounds pretty cool to me....

If I had know "everybody" was going to be there,I would have gone myself. Giraffes, elephants, hippos and even rhino's,depending on where they are at and population denseties, they all need to be controlled. One should read the enormous amount of folliage these cute little critters consume. Regardless of what a person may think,IF a story is written on them, one can be assured that 1. it was a justified, legal AND ETHICAL hunt 2. It DEFINATELY WAS NOT CHEAP and 3 IF it lives in Africa it is VERY likely that the animal is pretty tough to begin with and even more difficult to hunt. As a bowhunter I once thought Muskox was about the most ridiculous animal to "hunt",untill Chuck Adams and a local gentleman told me firsthand just exactly what was involved.

Please forgive me if my post seemed to be unfriendly, It wasn't meant to be that way at all.
I was so suprised to hear they were that tough. In my excitement, I hope I didn't offend anyone. I just learned all this from Mike himself. It really made an impression on me.
Once again, my apologies if I offended.
