Thanks for the inputs guys. I'm not a big fan of the 475 but just wanted to put some ideas and opinions out there. If I were to buy a 475, I think I would lean towards the BFR or the Freedom field grade. The Freedom's 4 shot capability may eliminate that choice though

As Axe said: "personal preference" If I consider the BFR to be bulky enough that I'd just as soon hunt with a 500SW Encore then I can choose to do so. Of course being a revolver, the BFR is in the revolver class whether it is stretch frame or not. It cannot be arbitrarily removed at my say so. However the shortest cataloged BFR (except the recent 44mag shorty) is an actual measured 7.25" barreled revolver weighing in at 3.6lbs/58oz in 475L or 50AE. That is something that exceeds my personal preference for a packing pistol. Therefore choosing to lump it into the "dedicated hunting arm" class and not being something I'd personally choose ever to buy leather for, I can still stand by my comment to lump it in with my Encore/Contender dedicated hunting arm group.
Sure, I can appreciate there are shades of grey here: Go to the MR precision center, get the barrel chopped, get the grip frame round-butted, etc. I guess before doing that and paying that sort of figure I'd just as soon go FA or seriously consider this Nimrod. I'm not trying to stir any pot - just trying to stand by my assertion that I consider a BFR an excellent value and well made, but best reserved as a dedicated hunting arm and not something that I'd be comparing a Nimrod to "apples to apples" - regardless of whether we are talking form or function.

Excellent points edk. But a buyer CAN order shorter barrels than the 7" from Mag research. This would put it in the same weight/size range as a Freedom or Ruger conversion

Still not seeing your point. Matters not though. My $750 BFR packs just fine.

Boxhead, is that the one that Jack Huntington worked over for you?

Still not seeing your point. Matters not though. My $750 BFR packs just fine. Never seen a front barrel band on a BRF before. Is that stock? For $750 that is a nice looking, all weather revolver. Wouldnt mind picking one up just like it. Can they be ordered for that price?

Hmmm, BFR at $750, or a Bowen (or the like) for 4 times as much (~$3,000). I know Bowens are NICE (I have a Bowen reworked S&W 38/44 pre-model 20 to .44 Special) and he does phenomenal work, but at 4 times the cost of a like-revolver? I must be cheap then, as I surmise I could buy 4 revolvers (BFRs) to one Bowen Nimrod. Not saying I wouldn't want one, but I am not a millionaire!

Yeah, thats why I put the word "prudent: in there. I also appreciate fine workmanship like that available from Hamilton Bowen and Jack Huntington. But if its available from Magnum research in a caliber I want, I would be hard pressed to spend the extra $$ and more importantly the wait

You guys are going to have to get it in gear! It isn't a choice of one or the other! The only choice is which one is next! ;D

As promised -- sorry about the photo quality. FA 83 top, BFR bottom (with scope mount): Again, I'm not seeing it.

I have to agree with Whit. I think EDK must be referring to the stretched frame BFR, not the regular frame gun used in the 475/500 JRH etc. Thanks for the pics here. I am going to have to order a 500 JRH BFR now.
