Went to the local gun show today hoping to find an SBH I passed on with box and papers a month ago while still looking for an Abilene-Seville. That dealer was not there today of course! Not wanting to wait another month in hopes he might be there next time I kept looking and one dealer there who I have dealt with several times before had two. Looked them both over, took the newer of the two even though no box/papers and had Pachy's on instead of wood. I had a new pair of woods left over from the last SBH project so the gun followed me home for $425. There are some awesome deals on line right now but when you factor in the shipping, tax (8.2 percent in my state) and dealer fees you add another 100 bucks so a really good deal becomes just so-so. Gun is made in '93, blue, 7.5 and in overall at least 90-95 percent condition, bore perfect. Tight flash gap, barely see it in the light and no side play etc. to speak of. Throats are pretty consistent at .4315-.432 and wont let my .431+ Lasercast bullets bounce off my toes. All in all a happy camper! Looks just like everybody elses SBH, would post a pic or two if I knew how!

Got to the range today and fired that puppy at 50 yards, the closest target on the rifle range. Shot it with pretty much full house loads in 2400 and H110 behind the 240 gr Lasercast semiwadcutters. Shot pretty well. Best was 21 grs with the 2400 and 23 grs with the H110. I see after swabbing the powder fouling out that the bore is heavily leaded which may explain the degradation of accuracy near the end. Glad I had my PAST glove along as I was using factory wood grips! But it was loads of fun! Dont have too many bullet choices at the moment. Will try some heavier bullets at some point. Any favorite loads anyone wants to pass on are appreciated!

Speaking of shooting gloves…I can remember when I bought my first SBH in 1978. Took it out to shoot with the factory woods and full power loads. I can still see the scar on my hand from the hammer spur!!!

Yep, the 2400 is the most accurate powder. Elmer was right. Dirty, powerful, accurate. I have always used the 250 cast Keith with 21.0 of 2400. Since Alliant took over its manufacture, they now recommend 20.0 as max.with the 250. As for leading, alot of casters are using a pretty hard alloy or they are water quenching them and they wind up being too hard IMO. The bullet wont obturate if it's that hard. This causes more leading than soft lead will. I use plain old wheel weights but I seperate the soft lead from the clip weights when I melt them in very large batches. I end up with a hardness of about 16-18. These dont lead my bores at all. But I dont shoot but about 150 a session. Good luck with the SBH. My favorite.

Thanks guys. After I used my Lewis lead remover, I find it wasnt as bad as it looked at first. Not all that much lead came out and the bore looks pristine again. I had along some jacketed Special loads from my dads stuff that was ancient that I had planned to shoot after the lead loads to help blow lead out but when I tried a couple of these before the lead shooting, two of three had badly split case bodies so stopped. Just old brass. This one might be a keeper. I have already ordered a steel ejector rod housing from Midway for it and am eyeballing a set of faux ivory grips too. Sort of a sucker for ivory, even fake.

Of all the guns I have owned in the last 20 years, the only one I don't want back is a Super Black Hawk that had been cut to 5". The cutting was very well done and the gun felt like it had had an action job, but everytime I shot it I bled. Quantities of blood. That square trigger guard ate me alive. Nope! Whoever has her now can keep her. Now the 3 scew 357, I grieve over daily.

LOL ! Sounds like you may have had a bad grip on it? The square guard does not bother me with 44 mag shooting. The 500 Linebaugh conversion bit me a few times but not too bad. I did round the trigger guard though

Nice revolver! I've shot a number of whitetail deer with my wife's SBH. I put a set of Hogues on her gun to help cut down on the recoil. They seem to help a lot.
Congrats. Now go find that elusive Abilene!

This one came with Pachys and they're good too, just dont like the look of rubber on a single action. However with full house loads they are a hand saver no question. I have already put a steel ejector rod housing on you may notice.

Shot it more today, this time with 270 gr Speer Gold Dot soft points and H110. It really liked this combo especially 20-21 grs of it. Liked it best of any load so far though 21 grs 2400 and 240 cast lead is about equal. BTW, I used the Pachys today. Sure does make a difference in how your hand feels afterwards! Dont like how they look but it does make it more pleasant to shoot the big stuff.

I've used the Lasercast SWC in my old Super. I like 22 grains of IMR 4227 I really don't get any leading to speak of. I also use the same load in my 44 mag Vaquero. They both have 4 5/8" barrels but recoil is a little worse in the plow handle Vaquero. The Super grip frame works better for me with full mag. loads.

I like the 240-250 grain LSWC over 22 grains of 4227 as well. Doesn't sting as much as the H110 and 2400 loads, seems like. Still has plenty of power and is very accurate out of a SBH Hunter and a model 29 and 629.
Only thing I don't like about 4227 is the smell, H110 and 2400 win out in that department.

Nice to hear I am not the only one to notice how powder smells. I've never used 4227. But I do not like H110. It smells awful. I will stick with 2400 and Unique.
