On the light primer strikes, I would call magnum research. If they don't have an answer, get a Wolff 28# mainspring to light rifle primers.

Fortyshooter,
With 35 years of tool making experience I am sure you have the knowledge and techniques to mill the case head recesses in the cylinder .002" deeper. With your expertise that would be a better way to go than taking the recoil surface off. If the cylinder becomes too tight you could always clean it up with a reamer.

On the light hammer strikes:
The 45-70 requires rifle primers which are much tougher than pistol primers. The heavy Wolff hammer spring will help. I have also had good luck using Federal primers. They seem to have a softer cup than most of the other primers. The combination a heavy spring and Fed primers took care of my misfires.
