I finally thought that it was about time to stop lurking here and become a member. I'm a huge .41 magnum fan and see that there are quite a few here as well. I picked up a new Ruger BH 4 5/8" .41 this year and inherited a S&W M58 from my father. I'm still learning about the many facets of this great cartridge but still have lots to learn.
I learned quite a bit from Mr. Martins' article on heavy .41 loads. However it left me with some questions. First I know those loads were shot in a custom built 5 shot revolver. Out of curiosity I was left wondering just how accurate are stock Rugers with these heavy weights? My last question is if I ever were to attempt loading any of the heavy weights, what is the Max safe load using H110/W296 with a 270gr SSK bullet in a stock Ruger?
For now I'm quite content on using 8.5gr Unique under a commercial cast 215gr SWCBB or 18.5gr 2400 under a Sierra 210gr JHP. I doubt I'll ever need anything more but I'd still like to expand upon my knowledge base of this great cartridge which is why I posed the questions above.

336a, Welcome. I too enjoy and shoot .41s... I also have a 58. I shoot some heavy bullets in my 657 Hunter (255gr LFP - 9.2gr Unique)....also have a OM Blackhawk....but I've not shot it yet.
Glad you signed up.

Thanks for joining and I'm glad you enjoyed the article. I haven't worked with the 275 grain SSK much in 41, but 19.0 of H110 is about max (work-up slowly). You can go a grain or two higher with the 280 WFN because of the shorter length. As for accuracy, I find my stock 41 Blackhawks shoot best with 230 - 265 grain bullets. That said, 275 - 300 still group well. Since I wrote that article I built another 5-shot 41 (this time chambered for the 1.40" wildcat made from 414 SuperMags). I also used faster twist barrel. I've pushed this one pretty hard....so much so I won't post the loads here. Let's just say I've had 335 grain bullets going 1,300 fps and holding 2" five-shot groups @ 50 yards. I've really settled on the 295 gr SSK at 1,150 fps as max in my 41's though (even the 5-shots). Bigger bullets and bigger punch are better served by the 44 Mag & 45 Colt. If you're a 41 nut like me though, it makes for fun experimentation. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Stock Ruger 41s run a 1:20 twist. S&W runs a 1:18 3/4. FWIW I read that JT recommended that FA use a 14 twist barrel when FA started making 41 mags. Not a lot of first hand experience with heavy bullet 41s here but I do hear with 250s and up the S&Ws and Rugers are a gun by gun wait and see...

Thanks folks for all of the insight. I too feel that 265gr is probably the best fit as far as heavy weights go for the .41. I don't see myself needing anything heavier than a 210gr - 220gr in the forseeable future. The 210gr Sierra ahead of 18.5gr of 2400 is right at my recoil threshold as it is. I know when enough is enough I can't imagine what the recoil of a 265gr bullet at 1300fps would be like right now.

All these boys ranting and raving about 41s have inspired me to buy a bunch of 41 bore Rugers, keep an eye out for a 41 mag FA 83, and even pick up a 270 grain LFN GC mold from LBT... Haven't loaded a single one... yet!

Hello back Erich, sorry to hear that you got out of your .41 she was a nice one.
Thanks for the welcome CraigC.
Lee I'm sure your right that that 265gr load probably recoils less than I might imagine whith all other things being considered. Yet at the same time I'm not an experienced big bore shooter. My .41's are the largest handguns I"ve shot, I've never shot anything larger.
Axehandle that is a great looking mold, sheeesh I really have to get into casting my own. I've been looking all over for some real 220gr Keith bullets that don't cost a arm & leg to try. I finally found a place but I know nothing of their product.
