I've been waiting on this barrel for a few years and it finally arrived a few weeks ago. Got to shoot it a couple times last weekend and I've been making more ammo this week as time permitted. Barrel is just a little short of 16 inches and is tapered with a muzzle brake. The 41 mag brass that had been turned down and ran through the 10mm dies wouldnt chamber. I got lucky and picked up a NOS box of herters dies and after running the brass through them, it chambered great. I shot some 180 gr solids and 10 gr unique last weekend. Loaded up some 180gr sierra hp's with No9 and hope to shoot them after a little bowhunting tomorrow morning.

Cool gun. And the best part is it's probably the only 401 PM Contender in existence.

It rained all day yesterday. I only shot 85 yds because I would have had to cross the fence in the pasture and wade a little mud to get to 100. I didnt even attempt to chrony because of the rain. 10 gr of unique are powder puff loads. When stepping up to 17.5 gr of AA9, you could tell a difference. I dont know if it was just me shooting yesterday or dumb luck, but on the AA9 shots, I would make 2 touch, then the next 2 would be in a different place practically touching, then the last 2. Using a 2-7 scope so I dont know how I pulled that off and still had such a big group. The 14.1 of blue dot seemed to have promise as well. These were at or above what would be safe in the revolver, but I can push it up more with the contender once I shoot over the chrony if I want to. Years ago, I used to have a 10mm Mag 14" contender barrel and you could puch the 135 gr noslers over 2100fps, but the jackets wouldnt hold up.

Now that's neat. Great looking Contender and what a unique chambering. I'll definitely set you up with some Powermag brass the next time I do a run. -Lee www.singleactions.com

I just have to ask...who made the barrel and grips for you? That, is one cool handgun! I wonder when GLH will put into production? As they say, "if you are ever in a mind to part with it, let me know." The boys here in Waseca would really drool.

Forgot to ask....who did the barrel? Also, I'm surprised to hear you could work 41 cases through the 401 die. I've never had any luck going that route, but it sounds like an option. Anyways, that's a really slick Contender. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Barrel is by On Target Technology. It is an EDM chamber.
This was 41 mag brass that I bought off gunbroker that had already been turned down for the 401. I had prepped 100 cases using my 10mm dies and they worked in the revolver but were too tight for the OTT chamber. I ran them once again through the herters dies and thankfully they worked.
I was thinking the way you prep the brass would give me more uniform results and tighten the groups a little as well as allowing me to bump it up a little more just for grins to see how much it will do.
Shot it over the chrony yesterday and got 1860 with the 180 gr sierra HP's and 18.3 gr of AA#9 (NOT SAFE FOR THE REVOLVERS!!!) I tried bumping it up to 18.5 gr but I got a little sticky extraction. Brake makes it kick about like a 14" tender in 223.
10 gr of unique gave 1430's with 180 gr....powder puff load.

Grips are by a local grip maker (Dave Dolin) that sells on Specialty Pistols and ebay. If I ever get around to finding grip screws and ferrels, I'll post some fantastic grips he made for my Herter's 401 revolver. Top to bottom 14" 5mm remington fluted OTT 12" 5mm Rem over/under OTT w/ D Dolin wood 17" 22 Rimfire OTT w/ integral AND removable brake and D Dolin wood 18" 18" 20 VarTarg OTT fluted SS (unknown wood maker but I liked it) 401 OTT tapered with integral brake

Could you tell me how to get in touch w/ Dave Dolin? I have a Herter's .401 PowerMag that is in desperate need of a set of grips.

5mm Rem. Now that's a cartridge you don't see anymore. Can you still get ammo?

Shoot me a PM with your info and I'll have Dave contact you.
Centurian started making the 5mm rimfire ammo again in 2005. You can get it online for less than $20/50 rounds.
