I took this cow moose in Maine on Monday with my .500 Linebaugh. First shot was somewhere in the 100 yard range. Going to have a whole lot of steaks in the freezer! There were a number of crop deprivation cow permits given out this year as the broccoli farmers are taking a beating. The outfitter was # 9 Lake Outfitters of Bridgewater, Maine. I got lucky and tagged out on day one. I couldn't be happier with the outfitter and their services. I was using Grizzly's 500 grain LFN load (rated at 1,100 fps). Shot her in the last couple of minutes of legal shooting time/light and she was merely a silouette, so I estimated where her shoulder was and squeezed. I hit her a little farther back than I had wanted to but it double lunged her in any event. She moved off a bit and I just continued shooting at what was now just a dark blob at least 125 - 150 yards away. I connected on a couple of the shots. I tend to shoot until they are down -- cuts on tracking and loosing game! She went down, and that was that. She was done but I still put one behind her ear. All shots were through and through. Here's the little beast.......

Bride of Bullwinkle....I like that. Nice work and I never get tired of seeing that 500. I need to shoot that one the next time we hit the range together. -Lee www.singleactions.com

That is one big bride! Awesome that you got her with the 500L SRH. I need to send my SRH to Jack... maybe next week if I can swing it. (I need to get my wife that washer and dryer I promised first!).
After my aunt died, my uncle went on a trip with his son-in-law up to Canada. He ended up downing 3 moose.... 1 for him, 1 for the son-in-law... and one that charged him after a guy from CA gut shot it. He gave me a big roast from his moose. Onions, potatoes, carrots; done up like a Sunday roast in the oven for about 5 hours. Yum!

You really lucked out getting one of those special permits. I know from experience participating in the Maine moose hunt lottery that the odds are really stacked against you.

Thanks, guys!
I didn't win the lottery -- ten outfitters did and they offered the hunts for a price. I paid for the priviledge!
Doug, I know what you mean! Gotta keep the wife happy -- a happy wife is a peaceful life....... ;D

She weighed 629 dressed -- or rather empty!

Shooting at a dark blob at 125-150 yards away doesn't sound very smart to me.

My first shot was true and a double lung and it was in legal shooting light. No need to rain on the parade, but I successfully took this animal, and confidently took my shots. I knew she was hit well with the first shot, but followed up with additional shots as is my nature. Thanks for your concern, Paul.

Shooting at a dark blob at 125-150 yards away doesn't sound very smart to me. Not really. The animal didn't get away, did it? And he cleanly hit it with the first shot, right? Hard to argue with lung placement. BTW, I've been to the range with Whitworth and trust me......hitting targets much smaller than moose isn't a problem for him at that range. -Lee www.singleactions.com
