Picked up a 15 inch 6.8 SPC barrel with an Encore frame. 15 inch 22-250 barrel included in the deal. Anyone spent any time with the 6.8 in a pistol length TC barrel?

Pulled 6.8 loading data off Hodgdon's web site. Ordered dies, brass, and 90/100/115 grain bullets from Midsouth and Midway.. The 6.8 SPC handgun journey begins!

Yrs ago, always wanted a basic Contender in .44 or 45/70 maybe. Never went there. Now have an AK47, with the ammo that came with, mixed in, is one round of AK74 ammo. Was holding a round of each in my hand the other day, thinking these'd make nifty TC rounds ! Am sure someone has allready figured that out though, by now. The 6.8 will fall somewhere between, yes ? steve b

Oh I've got a 7.62x39 TC barrel too! Bought dies and brass but I don't remember ever firing a cartridge from it. Always read that the 7.62x39 was a 30-30 performance level cartridge. Don't know how the 6.8 will perform from a 15 inch barrel.. Seems like the Hodgdon data was from a 24 inch barrel. Can't see a case so small needing much more than 15 inches of barrel..

Sounds like a cool rig. The 6.8 has some impressive ballistics.

I played around with a 6.8 spc when it first came out. I had a 15" Fox Ridge barrel. Got the barrel but brass was impossible to find. I ended up contacting Zac Smith who did quite a few articles on it and bought my first 20 pieces of used brass for $20. I was using 30 remington dies and necksizing with bushings.
That was years ago. Its come a long way since then in availability of components.
The barrel was very pleasant to shoot and accurate. My uncle has the barrel now, but I might ba able to dig up some of my reloading/chroney data. Back then everything was trial and error. They've even made pills specific for the 6.8 spc now.

Hodgdon has a full page of loading data.. Bullets really aren't an issue. As an old 270 REN shooter I had plenty of light 270 bullets sitting on the shelf. The new ones I ordered just to match the Hodgdon loading data. To lazy to go out in the shop and see what was there. I figure extra bullets was good since bullets don't go bad. MidSouth was sold out of brass. Midway had it in stock.

If I remember correctly, it's not that great in a pistol. Makes a great parrent case for .30 herrett though.

30 Herrett? I make 30 herrett with 30-30. Could use 375 Winchester or 38-55 brass but this 6.8 case is a pretty small rimless case. I'll get the camera out for some pictures soon...

Aren't the 30 remington (6.8 parent case) and the 30-30 basically the same without the rim? I guess it could easily be done. Just have to change the extractor, but the rims are a plus with the contenders.
I believe a guy on specialty pistols went the other way with a contender. He took his 6.8 spc and went for a rimed version. 270x30-30.

Yes, 6.8 to make .30 Herrett. You need to get a 6.8 extractor from T/C. I modified mine to work with both parent brass. 6.8 has much better brass QUALITY. 6.8 is thicker in the web and slightly less capacity. 6.8 is sized better for most chambers also. All the .30-30 brass these days is undersized at the head for easy extraction from lever guns and junk quality in general. Remington brass won't hold bullets it's so weak and winchester is just crap. The Remington 6.8 brass was an improvement, but you have to watch for donuts where the shoulder used to be - which is now the bottom 1/3rd of the neck. Much less trimming too. You will need a #19 RCBS shellholder. I'm selling my barrel, dies, brass, etc from this setup if anyone is interested. $200 takes it all, shipped to the lower 48. The last groups I shot from it were right at 1 1/8" for 5 shots - and I'm not great at shooting handguns off the bench.
Silver State Armory has 6.8 brass with small rifle primerr pockets.

I really like the 6.8mm and shoot it in the T/C Contender with a 14" barrel. The best load I've found to date is a Hornady 110 Vmax, 27 grains of RL 10X with a Fed 210M. Velocity averaged 2430 fps. The bullet is lightly constucted and would hesitate to use it on a large deer but for smaller deer, antelope or varmints its great. Barnes now has an 85 TSX that should be great but I haven't had a chance to work up a load yet

Holding all the 6.8 stuff here. Barrel, dies, brass, bullets... I'll play with it soon. As a real believer in custom TC barrels I'm thinking I'll put my real .277 bore money in Gary Reeder's 277 GNR. This is a 405 Winchester necked to .277. I'll write about it soon...
