I've found myself in a very rare situation tonight - I'm home ALONE! While this may be common for some of you, it is extremely rare for me - I'm in the middle of the child-raisin' phase of my life and a quiet evening alone is perhaps a once-a-year occurrence, if that. So what do I choose to do w/my time? Quick inventory of the toy box and make sure a couple neglected tools are oiled and happy, then onto my favorite forum with two fingers of Gentleman Jack in a glass. I rarely indulge, but I do like some good bourbon or scotch from time to time. Gentleman Jack scratches the itch as do Oban single malt scotch or Johnnie Walker black label. I had a bottle of J.W. gold label a friend gifted me a couple years ago. Quite good, but I wasn't sufficiently educated to really appreciate it at the time - probably aren't now in fact. I like some good tequilas too, but they're something I have to be in the mood for. When you gentlemen who happen to be connoisseurs of such desire an adult libation, what is your poison of choice?

More likely to brew a fresh pot of coffee than to drink alcohol of any kind. 59 years of enjoying life and working hard have brought on insulin and needles. Still enjoy a cold beer every other year or so...

I was always a Scotch drinker, then I moved to Irish Whiskey. I still like them both, but the last several years have found me going the Bourbon route. I went to a "Bourbon" tasting several years back and I was amazed at the differences in the small batch Bourbons that are out there now. I especially liked Knob Creek.

I too like Irish Whiskey, 12 year old Jamison scratches that itch. As far as single malts are concerned, I like Laphroig (10 year old), and for bourbon, I really like Single Barrel Jack.

Axehandle and I share the same afliction. However since I rarely drink anything beyond coffee or tea, the times I do diddle with the spirits is a definite treat! I am an Irish fan also. But this year a major change has occured here at the olde farm house.
We have started making our own.
We have gone completely red neck here! To include building our own still.
We have just completed our fourth attempt and after a taste I think we have done good.
I am now eyeballing the pear tree in the back yard. I am thinking of this coming fall....and brandy!

Pear brandy?? Think that can be shipped to the People's Repulsive of Kalifornia? I'd be willing to pay good money for some of that.
For those who mention Single Barrel Jack, I tried it for the first time last year and enjoyed it as well. Have any of you tried Costco's new Bourbon? $20 for a 1 Ltr and it's 103 proof. Not a bad deal but I'm interested in hearing if it's worth the $$.

For single malt, my father in law turned me onto Macallan 12yr. They make it in 10, 12, 18, and 25, but at $40 a bottle the 12yr is the best bang for the buck. I won't pay "by the glass" prices in a bar but I try to keep a bottle on hand at the house. Johnny Walker fills in nicely for other occasions.

I am convinced that the Gentleman Jack "formula" changed when they changed the bottle design, which more than a few folks have commented on as well. It used to be my favorite.
Of late it is brandy here for the most part, and besides going high dollar with Courvoisier XO cognac I have been drinking a fair amount of Korbel VSOP. Smooth as silk and very tasty. Just picked up a couple of bottles of their XS brandy but have yet to give it a whirl.

Shared a bottle of Skeeter's favorite, Maker's Mark, with Tom Richardson and some other Shootists in June. Very smooth. But, I am not a regular whiskey drinker.

Rob, that Makers Mark was not too hardy.
It didn't even make it through half the evening.
