When I shot IHMSA, I started with a 4" S&W 686. I shot the old Keith bullet, 168 grains as cast by a local guy, with 10 grains of Blue Dot. The only real problem I had was with the darn turkeys. And I found the 200 meter rams the easiest. I had the sight set so I just had to aim at the back line of the ram.... bang!..... wait, wait, clang! and the ram would topple over.
I didn't worry about the other guys there with their XP100's, etc. I just wanted to practice shooting handguns at long range.
I did shoot a Super 14 T/C Contender in 30/30 for awhile. You really don't need to load up so hot to reliably knock over the steel targets. But when you touched off a round with a single shot, there was virtually no wait time like I had with the 357 mag. It was BANG! CLANG!, right now.
Lots of fun. Don't know why I ever stopped going.
