I must have had my eyes open this week. On another forum, a member asked about a couple of Herter's .401 PowerMags he'd seen in one of his local guns shops. I e-mailed him and told him if he was not interested in buying the guns, I might be.
Well, he sent me an e-mail and he did not want the guns and he gave me the shop's number. I called. They were still available. The gentleman at the gun shop was great to deal with...he took a few bucks off the deal and ate the shipping!
I was able to use a credit card at no extra charge (not a common occurrence) Included was a bunch of brass ( I do not know if this is converted .41 Mag brass or the original Herter's propitiatory brass).
Also a nice set of .401 PowerMag Dies. Since he got paid on the Visa card, he is going to ship tomorrow.
And to top it all off...when I called our good buddy Mr. Zeus to brag (just a little) he told me he'd take one of these 40-50 year-old flame-throwers off my hands...but I do recall he did equated me to a crack dealer ;D
So in a couple days I'll have these PowerMags as well as the Virginian Dragoon I bought last week. It may be too hot to shoot...but it's never too hot to give new (to me) guns a good cleaning in the cool of the basement.
Pics will be forthcoming.

The guns arrived this afternoon. I gotta say, I'm pretty happy. Looks like an early and a later gun. The gun produced a bit later (by serial number) looks a bit better. All told... Two Herter's .401 PowerMag Revolvers 250+ pieces of "Herter's .401 Brass" - - This was a nice bonus! 50 pieces of .41 Mag brass cut down to .401 Herter's Sizing & Seating Dies RCBS Trim Die two piece set of Dies 200 +/- Bullets (unsized and unlubed .405) Some pics... Gun No. 1 - - sn V3278 - A bit nicer Gun No 2- - s/n V1343

Really nice set you have there. Getting the brass is a plus too because that stuff is pretty rare. I'd shoot worked over 41 Magnums though. The Herters cases were Norma produced and are known to be on the soft side (plus they're semi-collectible). Again, great looking pair and thanks for posting photos. -Lee www.singleactions.com

BTW, if you look under the barrels you'll see proof stamps. That'll tell you the year they were imported. The most common years seem to be '63 - '68. They were available in '61 and '62, but I don't think production was high for those years. The 401 stuck around until around 1971 or '72. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Thanks guys. Lee, The guns are marked '65 & '66 The '65 gun has a couple "non-standard features"... and Both revolvers have pretty weak loading gate springs. I looked at Gun Parts but did not see a screw for the shroud or rear sight....they did have loading gate springs. Bob
