That's a wonderful job of fitting and finishing them, Glenn. I've always liked white grips on stainless.

Good looking Holly, Glen
Just wait 'til they start aging and turning a mellow yellow. They'll be even prettier. You did a masterful job of fitting.
BTW, what was the outcome with your USFA FT with the offset barrel/cylinder. The thread disappeared.

BTW, what was the outcome with your USFA FT with the offset barrel/cylinder. The thread disappeared. Thanks guys, glad you like them. They aren't nearly as "white" as they appear in these pictures, I'll have to get better pics maybe tomorrow. They have a slight yellowish tint to them with a lot of small figure that resemble checking in ivory, gives it a lot of character I think. Jim, USFA sent a call tag to me, should be at the office tomorrow probably for me to send it back in. Gary was super about the whole thing and shared the pictures with everyone at USFA from the sounds of it. They are a stand up company and a credit to the firearms industry in my opinion. They are going to replace and fit a new cylinder and are also fitting a 45 ACP cylinder to it while they have it. Since the gun is new, they told me that it wouldn't be a problem to swap hammers with me as I'm wanting a true bisley style hammer to go with the bisley backstrap that I'm ordering from them. Alan is going to do his welding magic on the gripframe pieces, turn the barrel a little, add a #5 latch and a new rear sight and it will be a my version of the #5 in 45 Colt with an extra ACP cylinder. Should be a good looking piece when he is done with it........ Take care. GS By the way Ken, great job on the rock chucks!! ;D

Glen,
You're right, USFA is a fine outfit. They'll make it right, you can bet on it.
Sounds like Alan is making you a great piece. Can't wait to see pics.

Glen
Nice job on the grips they look great. The pictures are very good, I have a pair of CLC Holly grips and its hard to get the grain to show up in pictures. Your first picture shows the grain nicely.

I just realized that I need to wipe down the right side of the gun again with my scotchbrite. Evidently, I did the left side with the pins in but never the right as the right side of the pins are still polished in the pics. Funny what you notice way after the fact. I was bored yesterday waiting for a roofer to show up so I took the file to the front sight blade, the barrel warning and the cylinder rollmarking and then polished it all back out with different grades of paper and finished it up with the good ol' FA scotchbrite method Lesson for the day is basically, never leave a redneck unattended with a good file nearby when he's getting bored. The results can be disastrous!! Now, I need to replace that base pin and the rear sight and I'll be happy with this one I think. I just can't seem to convince myself to like the look of either of those things as they come from the factory. I like the knurled and #5 styles from Belt mountain and really prefer the field sight from Bowen personally. I need to order one for my son's bearcat anyway, this makes a great excuse I guess.....

I'm embaressed since Sixshot gave me a similar set of "project grips" and I've left them "all alone" on my work bench for way too long. This THREAD will be the impetus to get me to "get the lead out" and get 'er done!
Thanks!

Zeus. I REALLY love those grips. I have been kind of intrigued with holly for a while but the pictures I have seen before made it look rather plain. The grain yours show have pushed me over the edge. The SS .45 blackhawk I am building up WILL have holly grips. There is a holly tree near my favorite deer stand that seems to always be in my way. Wonder how long it will take to get it dried out I also like the finish/texture on your bisley. What color scotchbrite did you finish up with ?

Shakey, shoot sixshot a pm and he can get you stocks that are oversized and you can fit them to your frame and then finish them how you want. I have no clue how long it would take to dry out a newly cut tree. The walnut that I have here at the house for stocks has been cut for almost 30 years, so I'm betting its probably ready There is a lot of character in these holly stocks, more than the pictures show but I've seen other ones from sixshot with more "markings" than these also if that is what you want. When I got these and started working with them, I was really surprised at just how "plain" they look as they are very "white", but as the first few coats of finish dried, they really take on a whole new character in my opinion. The colors start to show and the wood just looks entirely different. I'm really happy with them. As far as the finish on the gun, it also doesn't show as well in the pictures but i use the same one that I use on my Freedom Arms guns to buff out marks, the maroon or burgundy pad. The finish on the barrels and frame of my premier grades FA sixguns looks the same as this so if you have one of those or have handled one, maybe you can get the idea of the finish in person...If you can't find any maroon or burgundy, let me know and I'll send you a small piece that will do what you need, just pm me your address. I need to find a few more pieces myself around here when I finally think about it. If there are any deep nicks or such, polish those out with progressive grades of paper or whatever means you have to before finishing with the scotchbrite. Hope that helps.... GS

Zeus,
Thanks for the info. I'll check with sixshot on a set of blanks. I think I am still going to try making lumber out of that holly tree though. A good supply of holly sounds like a pretty neat thing to have.
I don't have any FAs or even any place to look at one. But, I have a maroon scotchbrite pad. I'll give it a try. I got my pads at the local auto parts store. If you have any trouble finding them I will be glad to mail you some. Just let me know.
