A Spanish SxS and a Beretta 686, 20 ga's, have come and gone. A M37 Ithaca 12 ga with extra slug barrel, bought with my trapline money is gone too. The "battery" is pared down to a camoed 12ga Mossberg and 2 M37 Ithacas. One a '49 20ga, the other a '50 16 gauge. The 20ga came with a full choke that got reamed to .003 or so. Enough to put some drag on the wad.

I have been using a 20 gauge for nigh on 10 years when pheasant hunting in SoDak. Benelli M2, lighter gun with lighter ammo, carries better walking mile long crop fields or stomping cattails in the "crick".
Also, the new TSS shells make smaller gauge shotguns deadly at longer ranges with the heft of 3.5 inch ammo.

Old thread but a good excuse to post gun photos. 12ga Franchi Affinity, 20ga Beretta BL-3 and my grandfather's 20ga 1937 Winchester Model 12. Carried all 3 at one time of another for pheasants last season. A 16ga SxS would fit in nicely some day. I suppose a 28ga would be fun also. Tim

Wow, i remember starting this thread! Haven’t bought any more shotguns, but i did get my grandpas old Winchester single shot 12 Ga. Don’t remember the model number, believe its one of the less expensive models that they didnt bother marking with serial numbers.

That looks just like the old model 12 16g I inherited from my grand father and just recently gave to my daughter. Same level of finish wear and wonderful patina.

My vote is 12ga for ducks, 20 with 6,4 shot for pheasant,6 for chucker due to those things run and fly fast.410 on quail with 7.5 or 6 rabbit open dessert 6 brush mid west I like 4 shot. The reason I don't like biting into lead and getting a free filling in my teeth . Large shot destroys small critters same as to much lead. Shot size adjustment to your game rather than caliber some times is the better call.
