Going broke shooting it, but I've had a lot of fun with this.... Anyone else on the forum shoot 50 BMG? I ask because I may set-up a tracer lathe to produce 800 grain solids. -Lee www.singleactions.com

I've been tempted but lack of a close by adequate place to shoot them has saved me a bunch of money..

Had one of the Barretts back when they first came out - finally sold that. Now my buddy has one of the current bolt actions that use the AR grip frame. It shoots like a darn and those new muzzle brakes sure work great.
Trouble is finding something appropriate other than paper to shoot at.... What are you shooting at? Long range or ?

Mostly paper out to 200 yards. An old Ford 360 V-8 took some hits along the way though -Lee www.singleactions.com

I see a new slogan for Martin Engineering, "When we say bullet proof, by God and John Moses Browning WE MEAN IT!!!"

My friends girl friend is about 105#'s and just loves to shoot his 50 - a real testiment to the muzzle break.
Years ago with the Barrett, we tested it on an older junk car the father in law had on the farmstead. It was a straight 8 and we tried to get the AP rounds to penetrate the motor. It took multiple shots in the same area but it did break through.
I had always wanted to get it out to Montana to another friends ranch where we could try some real long range shooting without worry about it bouncing somewhere improper but never got around to that test. It just seemed to get old punching paper at our 200 yard range.

Tell me it wasn't a Buick straight 8....I love those old motors. Anyways, the thing with 50's is most of them shoot best beyond 200 yards. Not saying they won't group at 100, but the bullet is just starting to stabilize at that range. Speaking of bullets, I still get the best results form 750 grain AMAXs. I've tried Barnes and other 800 grain solid match bullets. While good, they never seem to perform as well as the Hornadys (at least in my gun). My favorite load is 215 grains of H50BMG with that slug. -Lee www.singleactions.com

I shudder to think of the '47 Ford Pickup me and my heathen brothers shot up on my Grandads farm back in the day. It was just sitten in the pasture with weeds grown around it.....

I will admit that while I badly want one,I know nothing firsthand about 50 BMG. But I remember reading once that the bullets didnt really get stabilized till about 600 yards.

I finally got to shoot a 50 BMG last weekend. Went to a guys farm to look at a gun he had and noticed the Barrett mod. 99 bolt gun on the work bench. I forgot about the gun I went to look at. He asked me if I wanted to shoot it. LOL, that's a silly question. I shot 15 rounds, loved every shot. When he told me how much money I had shot up, I quikly go over wanting one. Bill

7000 grains divided by 215 grains = 32.5 rounds per pound of powder!!!!!! You better be buying that by the barrel. I can see where the cost would quickly get out of hand. I would love to shoot one at least a couple of times just to say I had.

Glad to hear the muzzle breaks are better. Word went around the tactical types 2-3 yrs back, de-tached retinas. This from the bolt varieties of .50 BMG rifles. steve b
