I'm planning a hunt in Illinois next fall. They require factory loaded ammo in a handgun. (Yeah, I know stupid!!) I don't think I have ever hunted with a factory load in any of my pistols. I've looked until I am confused. I'm trying to get the best bang for the buck here. I'm shooting a .45 Colt and have a .44 Mag as my back up gun. (In case I break something on the .45) What are some of the best hardcast factory loads out there? And even jacketed loads.
Thanks Spades

I have used, and liked, the Federal CastCore loads. They are only @100 fps slower, but less expensive than the premium loadings. The deer didn't seem to notice. steve b

In the 44, I like Black Hills 240 gr load with the Hornady XTP bullet @~1250. First read about this round in Taffin's writings so I gave it a shot. Most accurate factory 44 load in several different 44s. Very effective on deer; never had one go more than 20 yds after hit. Have fun on your hunt.

I will second the motion for putting reloads in a factory box. In all honesty how often is something like this checked?

I got my IL buck last year with a factory 45 Colt Buffalo Bore load.
Doubletap, Buffalo Bore, Grizzly, all have good hardcast loads IME
That said, I'm with the other guys that the handloads aren't going to get you in trouble in a factory box.
You'll have 5-6 in your gun, keep a strip of another six in your pocket and leave the box in the car.
Good luck.

I may go as far as to match up my headstamps. I still can't believe that is actually a law. Amazing.

I'm going to go with BBA 325 LFN for the 45 Colt. I figure I can get a 20 round box and have plenty. I'll reload my own in a similar loading and if I need to I can use this box and BBA brass to reload and carry.
Hell, I'm tempted to shoot the factory loads and reload just to do it. But I'm going to "stay" legal!

Like the rest of you, I think the "factory" stipulation for ammo is more nanny-state ridiculousness. How do they know one way or the other unless you open your mouth though? Am I required in such states to have a box of factory ammo with me? What if it's just me, my sixgun, belt, holster and ammo? I understand the odds of a fish cop checking s slim to none, but... is there really any way for them to know?

Nice, wildcats, and old oddball stuff like .450NAA is not legal along with 475 and 500maximums. Like others have posted stupid law. At least part of Africa has a laws that your brass must be stamped and match your gun's marking for cal.
