I have a Ruger original Bisley Vaquero in .45 Colt and a recently purchased Ruger .45 Colt/.45 ACP convertible. All three cylinders were undersize. I reamed them all to .4525" and now they all shoot extremely well.
I have measured a number of fairly recent Ruger .45 Colts and all have been undersize. However, that does not trouble me overmuch. After reaming, you now have custom cylinder throats that will give excellent results. Compared to oversize cylinder throats - I'll take undersize every time but fully understand they MUST be corrected to shoot well.
All of my guns MUST shoot cast bullets well - I won't use anything else.
On the other hand, I have several Ruger .44 Specials and Magnums and all of them work VERY well with "standard" .430" cast bullets. Why Ruger gets the .44's right and doesn't get the .45's right is a mystery to me.

I don't know Dale, but I've noticed that myself. I've had some good shooting Ruger .45's and some dogs, but I never had a Ruger .44 that was anything but accurate.

I had undersize cylinder throats in both my Bisley Vaquero (.45 Colt) and also my SS Bisley .45 Colt/.45 ACP. However, after reaming the cylinders in both guns (and all four cylinders in a couple of friends convertibles) ALL of them now shoot like NRA Bullseye guns. That is to say, EXCELLENT!
For some reason, all of my Ruger .44 Specials and Magnums came with proper cylinder throat sizes. They shot well right out of the box.

Yep. Step one. Correct the cylinder throats.

Beartooth Lapping compound-check Fresh cast 255gr boolits-check Seating bolt-check Fired cases-check Steel plates-check
No universal decapping die. Would my 475L decapper work? Or maybe the 50 AE? Those shouldn't size the case any.
4.5gr of Trailboss for around 600fps, or drop back to 4.0gr?

Had that for a while! Couldn't find any real copper scrubbers locally. Only the copper washed steel garbage. Went into a little kwik mart somewhere and saw a box of individual Chore Boy scrubbers in the display with the other dope paraphernalia. I don't know what purpose they serve in the drug world, but needless to say whoever needed some after I left would have come up short that day Bout to go roll a few in the lapping compound!

I've posted this about a hunnert times on various forums. For a few bucks you will have enough pure copper mesh for a gunclub of lead shooters. Don't let the fact that it is a pest control site dissuade you. www.doyourownpestcontrol.com/SPEC/pick-stuffit.htm

!@#$% seater bolt! I thought the threads looked a bit fine, but when I held it up beside a regular die the threads looked the same. Started it by hand and made about 7 turns, then it got tight. Took it out and looked at the threads for any damage and couldn't see any. Then I got the bright idea that it was just a little rounding of a thread or something and grabbed a wrench and oiled the threads again and brushed the press threads out. Screwed it in as far as it would go by hand and made about 1/2 a turn with the wrench. Something is wrong this is too tight I thought. Took is out and now, of course, my regular dies are too tight to turn in by hand easily. I'll have to call Beartooth tomorrow and tell them the supplier cut the threads wrong on the bolt or something. Then I'll call RCBS and see if they can repair the little Partner press that I loved for handgun loading. Till I get it sorted out, I'll be using the Rock Chucker.
I am not dogging Beartooth in any way, but check your seating bolt and don't force it. With Mr Garza's article in Gunblast, I am sure I am not the only one trying firelapping. Feel like an idiot for grabbin a wrench. Should have known better.
