I recently picked up a USFA flattop target and am looking for some custom grips for it. Does anybody know a source? The black plastic just don't fit my hand, I would like something a little oversized. Thanks

I have had Brian Neely of www.klamathriverwoodworks.com make one piece grips for several of my USFA Single Actions. As you say the stock grips seem too small, but Brian's one piece are a little larger and much easier to handle. He has lots of different materials to choose from, and prices are very reasonable. He does require that you send him the gun, minus the cylinder. Turn around time is a few weeks.

Thanks guys. I might check out Scott or Klamath River, I have a set of his grips and they are beautiful. I was really hoping that Cary would chime in, he has the most gorgeous Spalted Maple.

I made no reference to Cary Chapman at CLC due to him making grips exclusive only to Rugers right now. His work is outstanding, in any case. He is the man to contact after acquiring your Ruger NM BH Flat-top, however.

I am quite well aware of Cary's workmanship. The ivories on that USFA are beautiful. I guess my question now is how difficulty is it to remove the gripframe from the USFA? I have taken them off Rugers but never this. Thanks

magman I sent the gun to Persinger (less cylinder) and he did the rest. However, I suspect it's no different than removing a Colt grip frame, which is pretty simple. The trick is in "not buggering" the screws which I'm a master at doing .

Magman, I'd contact USFA, talk to Gary Granger 860-296-7441 ext 13. I'd at least ask about them fitting a nice set of custom stocks to one of their own guns. Several great stockmakers have been suggested, but I'd still contact USFA & see what they say?
By the way, congratulations on your new USFA!!! Nice guns. Frank

I wish Cary did Colt or replica grips. He's already stocked all my Rugers and I'd quickly put him to work on some Colt patterned guns.
Due to the excellent machine work, USFA's come apart very easily and more importantly, they go back together almost without effort. Unlike most other makers where you have to play around with the tightening sequence to get the seams just right. Just do yourself a favor and get a set of fitted screwdrivers or driver bits. Take the time to use the bit that fits the screw. IIRC, Colt sets have five or six bits.

My USFA lightweight .22, customized by Bowen, has fantastic exhibition grade one piece walnut grips direct from USFA.
